Android 2.3

Audi, I did have to pull the battery and reboot to get my phone to work.

The bluetooth disconnect was solved by doing a hard reset (Power off the phone first and then hit Volume Down + Home + Power).

Here is what I noticed so far:

1. Bluetooth would not connect (fixed by hard reset).

2. Apps saved to SD do not show on Downloaded list and icons do not work properly after power off (resolved by moving back to internal memory which defeats major purpose of upgrade).

3. NuanceVoice Control does not work properly (cannot adapt voice). Without it I can no longer do effective dialing. Under 2.1, I could adapt my voice to Nuance and it quite good at voice dialing. Now it is useless. There is a new Voice Search by google which has accurate voice recognition, but is not adapted to one touch hands-free dialing. Makes the phone kind of useless.

4. FM Radio does not work (cannot change channels or turn off radio unless you do a power off of phone).

5. Music lost almost all album covers. Some will occasionally pop up so they are there, but it seems that the new system has problem reading them.

6. Generally apps seem to operate slower (eg. my Contact Lookup app takes a long time to do a search).

7. Surprisingly, my GPS is now blistering fast. It used to take forever to lock down position. After upgrade, it does it in seconds.

8. Email and text message LED notification no longer works.

While I was with the LG support rep, I asked if I could go back to 2.1. She said no, it is a one way process. (I guess if you know how to root, there may be other ways around that, but I don't want to do that).

I've tried multiple hard resets...It just seems that wherever the updater is reading the version from within the phone V20A is the response it gets so it automatically fires back no update required.

It would be nice if an update could be forced somehow.

I think my only hope now is to wait for LG to go beyond V20A or to wait for the 2.3 files to appear in the root forum.

My money is on the root forum!

Thanks again for your help though.

Under the Update Tool, did you click the Customer Support and then Phone Recovery? You then have to type in your model and serial number or IME. It will restart and finish off the update.

Audi I don't know if i'm understanding your issue completely, but have you tried deleting the lg updater on your computer and reinstalling it and all the drivers. Not sure if that will help just something i might try.
Would you guys rather have stayed with 2.1 then update? I still haven't cause i have alot of tests right now and am too busy, but i'm sorta contemplating updating now even though i've been waiting and was so excited when i saw this finally.

Hi Folks,
I'm new to the board and have a couple of questions.
I just updated my Shine Plus to 2.3.3 and notice the status bar is now black and different from 2.1 Is there a way to make it transparent like before so the wallpaper goes all the way to the top of the screen?
Also there is an annoying widget at the bottom that didnt' used to be there which shows a phone, launcher and browser icon.
Does anyone know a way to get rid of (or change) that puppy?
ALso I have a ton of applications that seem to be active and I can't kill them. AppKiller tries but they always come back. When I look at other forums the consensus is to just live with them. Seems kinda flaky to me. Also I hate facebook and can't get rid of it.

Any ideas? Thanks!

For the status bar, didn't it used to be white not really transparent in 2.1. The status bar is now supposed to be black in the 2.3 update. That's how gingerbread is; it's supposed to be a darker-cleaner look to save battery. If you want it away out of side you could use a third-party launcher that has that capability like GO launcher or ADW i believe can do that with a swipe gesture.
As for the phone, app drawer, and browser at the bottom, this is the new stock launcher. It's not a widget, it is your dock. That's just how 2.3(Gingerbread) looks. Like i said before if you don't like that you could use other launchers. I prefer GO launcher because i can download icon packs and use there custom icons and it is really customizable. Also the swipe gestures are a nice touch. Anyway, that's only way you can change that if you don't like it.
For the applications: I personally do not use appkillers, as they run all the time and drain battery themselves. I usually go into the manage apps right when i first turn on my phone and kill all the apps i don't want running from the start. Then maybe a few times through the day just check to see which apps are running. Some will always come back and it's better to leave then continually kill it, or it will keep consuming battery by starting up again.
Facebook is just stock on the phone, I believe you can just move that to your sd card, not 100% sure on that one, but ya hope this helps you. Just write again if anything else.

TTTH you are using the Android home screen. You can switch to the LG Home screen. Click the home button 2 or 3 times and there will be an on screen menu to select your home screen. The lg home allows you to move different apps into the bottom launcher.

I just bought this phone last night and read there's a software update. There's a ton of room available as I've only installed a couple apps and done nothing else yet. It's not unlocked and completely factory.

I followed the steps from the telus mobility site by using the LG mobile phone support tool. It says there is an update, the phone update application launches...does the first part (analysis), and then it always fails at the second part (download update)...I tried this on two different pc's now.

error message is something about unable to update due to fatal error, contact support. LG support just tells me that there is an issue with the update and the techs are working on it (yeah right)

Am I missing a step or something? Any update tips for newbs lol.

Good Afternoon,

Yep, I did that. The recovery update opens. However when it gets to the point of checking software version it too believes that the version is already V20A and halts stating that the version is current and no update is available.

I have tried this on multiple different computers.

I believe if I could some how format the main that the LG Recovery tool would work. Does anyone know how to do that? Perhaps with ADB?

Thank you again for the help and ideas!

Do you have the phone rooted? If so, you can get an application like root explorer, modify /system/build.prop and replace all references to v20a with v10d...

The only way to change the notification window is through theming of the framework-res and systemUI AFAIK... I'm gonna have a crack at it as soon as I can get an extract of the ROM and deodex it.

all answers of the post after yours I agree with, but you don't need to and actually shouldn't go in and kill apps all the time.

there is no point in doing this in android unless the app is poorly coded. apps ALWAYS sit in memory - this speeds up multitasking of those common apps without having to launch them from scratch each time (which does take some time). Android has a brilliant built in auto task killer that will kill off older apps when new memory is needed so don't worry - your phone is working perfectly and actually working much better than it did in 2.1. 2.1 had tons of flakiness in it's memory management compared with 2.3 and you'll find that apps don't take over your phone as often and you dont' get extended-use gradual slowdowns in 2.3 like you could have in 2.1.

what's not to like about it? this is all a TON of improvements in android OS over a period of one year compared to the ancient 2.1 release we had before.

I DID find that the upgrade didn't go so well though. I finally wiped her phone's memory last night from the privacy setting or where ever. of course, leave your sd card alone, it has nothing to do with this so no need to wipe it. but after wiping the phone and re setting up her accounts etc and reinstalling apps I think it's performing much better now.

Among other things this may have solved the serious battery calibration misinformation the phone was retaining after the upgrade process where it could only run for a couple hours before dying and charging only took an hour before it said it was full and to unplug the charger.

Hopefully now it will charge correctly. that battery info is just held in a text file in the memory and needs to be wiped but I don't know how to wipe it on a non rooted and non recovery-flashed phone. I'm more used to my hero with it's very mature hacking community. But if this wipe didn't solve the battery issue in this phone then I'm sure I'll find a way to get into recovery and do it myself if I research a bit more.

anyway, it's running awesome wtih launcher pro plus (fastest launcher around, still after all this time) and hopefully will solve a few issues we've had with it since purchased on 2.1.

Hhhmm...I opened up build.prop and did not see any references to V20A.

It appears the update has been pulled by LG. I am going to try to flash the 2.3 images now available in the root section (thanks by the way!).

Thank you for you help!

Well it works, kind of. The Move to SD Card only freed up about 15 mb of internal storage. Many of my Apps can't be moved to SD (eg Calengoo) or widget does not work if main program is in SD (eg Texas Holdem).

I was able to download and install Angry Birds for the first time in about 6 months.

Each of my SD apps disappeared from the Downloaded applications list after a reboot. The apps are still on the home screens and still work, but the shortcut icons becomes generic icons and the app does not show up in the Downloaded Applications list. I had to move all the apps back to the internal storage and then reboot to get the apps back onto the Download list and to get back the original icons. Weird

Booting up is a lot slower than before. But booting up a couple times seems to speed things up. Also weird.

Wifi seems less reliable, but maybe its because the Market also changed and seems slower.

Anybody else having problems?

I wonder if my install was buggy. Anyway to do a clean reinstall of 2.3?

Hi everyone. First post here.
I did run into the same problem with my phone. Although the update to 2.3 went without problems, the applications that I moved to the SD card do not appear anymore in the list of downloaded apps. And the icons on the home pages are generic. The other day, I turned the screen on and the phone was busy regenerating these icons and the associated apps now appeared in the downloaded apps list, however it hung at that point and I had to reboot. Now none of those apps appear in the list and the same generic icons show up on the home page. I don't know if it is a problem with the update itself or a bug during installation. Otherwise my wi-fi is stable but sometimes some apps (like Juice Defender) disappear from the running apps list. Seems that there is some kind of task killer but I don't know where to access it.

Hi,

There has been report of app2SD not working properly on 2.3.3. Moving app back to phone and back to SD usually works. In a case like this, I'd suggest backing up your SD card and reformatting it. It's possible the .android_secure folder where these apps are stored is causing issues or that the SD card's file system is screwed up.

As for task killer, there is built in memory management in Android... But there isn't much way of removing it or tweaking it. custom ROMs might help this situation though, because some parameters are at kernel level, others are at app level.
