Help android 4.0.4 IP address unavailable?

OK, so I'm loving android 4.0.4 no issues since I updated a month or so ago via kies on my unrooted XEU galaxy s2...

Except one...

Only had it twice since I updated...

Browsing net, you tube, play store etc over wifi for an hour or so without issue then you tube started buffering..

Then play store died then lost internet connection..

On going into settings, wifi, advanced, it says Ip address unavailable..

I tried rebooting my phone but it didn't help, I rebooted my router but that didn't help either..

Assuming it was my ISP I logged onto my pc but that connected to internet with no problems..

It doesn't do the obtaining Ip address, connecting, disconnecting cycle like others have had.. it says connected to my wifi and the wifi icon is in the status bar it just won't go online! Page cannot be displayed etc...

The only way to get it back was to turn my phone off for about half an hour and on turning it back on the ip address returned..

This problem happened again tonight (the second time) but the only difference is that I got it back by changing to static Ip address which didn't connect but then changed it back to DHCP and it is now back online as I write this but weirdly advanced settings still states IP address unavailable!?

Any advice appreciated!

Apart from this, 4.0.4 is the most stable release I've had so far!

:-P .

Thanks.

Next time it happens, try turning off wifi on the handset for 10 seconds then switch it back on. See if this reconnects you.

Sorry... forgot to say.. I did turn off wifi for few minutes when it first happened tonight.. but it didn't help no...

Reconnected to wifi straight away when I put it back on but couldn't use you tube, play store, net etc..

Still says IP address unavailable now! And been back online since my initial post and rebooted again inbetween too!

Cheers.

I have the s2g variant and I updated from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4 four days ago.Phone has been operating smoothly untill some 2 hours ago when I came across the same problem: IP Unavailable and can't connect to internet. It's preety frustrating. If I don't get a solution soon I'm considering downgading to 2.3.6.Changing to static ip hasn't worked for me and now I'm trying the power-off method. My router works fine and I don't have connection issues with my son's android phone or my wife's i-pad so it should be a bug in ics 4.0.4.Is there a way of reporting this behavior to samsung?

I am getting the sme issue. My phone tries to connect to wifi.

It does this when I try to connect - obtaining IP address>Remembered Secured with WEP>diasbled secured with WEP.
All in about a space of 1 minute. When I look at advanced settings it says that my IP Address is unavailable - I tried using the static IP but it didn't work, I have also tried turning off and on and Wifi all share.

Over it - please help

I did this and it worked: Apparently as it turns out the solution is to use static ip
I went to Wi-Fi settings>>Advanced then enabled used static IP
and set the parameters below as
IP Address: 192.168.1.107
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
DNS 1:192.168.3.1
DNS 2:192.168.1.1

Well I left my phone off all night then tried again this morning with DHCP..

It said connected straight away but still wouldn't let me go online and IP address still unavailable...

I changed to a static IP address and that HAS now let me back online!

But why has it suddenly stopped working altogether using DHCP after working perfectly for the last month or so bar one blip plus was working perfectly all the time with gingerbread using DHCP?

It's a solution to the problem but doesn't excuse the bug!

I take it if I now go to my girlfriends it won't now connect to her wifi router unless I manually go and change the static IP address again?

Then change it back again when I get Home?

And what if I want to use wifi at a starbucks or something? Would I have to now keep manually changing the static IP for every different connection I want to use??

Not exactly ideal!!

:-(

If you are on ICS, I believe you can have either static or dynamic IP on individual wifi connection. Basically it should be set up as dynamic normally. Each time you connect to wifi the first time, have a look in the advance option. Check whether its set to dynamic and take note of the IP. Then you connect to another fixed IP wifi and check if that is effected by the earlier wifi settings. It shouldn't I think.

If it is, then get wifi manager or similar of google play. You can set up wifi profiles for easier switching. If you are on GB, then this should be the method cause I know GB don't have individual IP settings for different wifi connections.

Well...

As an update to this, I went to my girlfriends and it connected to her router with my S2's IP settings set to DHCP without any problems.

But when I got home, yet again my S2 would not connect to my router with DHCP but only with a static IP address.. (But yes Russell Ng you are correct that at least it automatically remembered my home network and automatically changed to static IP addressing with the IP address I configured earlier!)

I dug out my old HTC hero and that connected first time to my router with DHCP as does my PC and my dad's laptop!

Weird that it use to connect to my router without any issues with DHCP on ICS 4.0.4 and it's only in the last week that it now point blank refuses to connect to my router using DHCP!?!

I wasn't content with it changing to using static IP addressing just on my home network so I have semi-solved the issue (I hope) by researching on the net and setting up a reserved IP address on my router for my Galaxy S2, so (as I understand it) when it sees the MAC address of my S2 trying to connect to the router it assigns it a static IP address of my choice but still does this with my S2's IP settings set to DHCP for when I'm out and about using other networks.

Why this problem occurred though is still a mystery to me unless it is a fault in 4.0.4!?

Cheers.
