Might as well wait till spring... I love this phone but it didn't sell as sprint thought. Google isn't goin to push updates as quick to phones that didn't sell as well as thought...
Another thing why do ppl on here make up stuff like this... Provide the link ya read this from... Myself i've developed roms for this phone and I'm apart of motorola development an hv never heard anything about this phone getting ice cream unless it's a rom
Go to xda thread will photon get ice cream sandwich 4.0 and the answer so far is no... There is a thread from moto development... But ya can't always go off that but I really doubt it will

You can not trust the word of reps (either Moto or Sprint) until an official announcement is made. They won't tell you "Yes! The Photon is getting Ice Cream Sandwich!" because they don't know, and they're probably not allowed to speculate. Much safer to say no now and yes later than the reverse. People claimed the original Evo 4G wasn't going to get Gingerbread, and yet it was one of the first existing phones to get upgraded (and even got Gingerbread before the Evo 3D came out).
Long story short: no one knows, but honestly, why would they not update it eventually?

Umm the evo was not one of the first to get 2.3
Plus htc and moto are 2 different manufacturers... Updates are pushed to phones that sell the most... If it doesn't sell why waist money on the development... It's like anything in sales cars homes appliances and even phone accessories... Notice that the photon doesn't hv many accessories.. I love the phone but sprint just didn't advertise it or push it like the evo... Just hv to accept it
The Photon has plenty of accessories... just as many as the Atrix, Atrix 2, and Bionic.
That isn't a good litmus for updates.
The Photon was my first Moto device. If the Photon doesn't get an official ICS update, that will be the final Motorola device I ever purchase and probably my last Android device.
Windows Phone looks very tempting. If they get the Tegra Grey and my Photon goes without an update, I'll be switching platforms.

I think it would be valuable to identify a high-end Android smartphone that didn't receive a single major upgrade. That would be the scenario here, of course: we have a high-end Android smartphone and a major Android version releasing within a few months of the smartphone's release, and it doesn't get it. Ever.

Umm...evo came shipped with eclair (2.1) and updated to Froyo (2.2) after 1 month. So, despite it being 3rd (I only remember the Nexus S...shipped with Froyo and the Droid X getting it before the EVO).

A few European phones saw Gingerbread hit in April and May, and China's Meizu M9 was updated in May as well. But for those of us stateside, the Evo was one of the first existing phones to get the upgrade.
Will the Photon be one of the first? No. Moto's already said they're focusing on the Razr, Bionic, and Xoom tablet first. But it will come. Probably not before I use my last Premier upgrade, but it will happen unless Moto makes an official announcement to the contrary.
*Note that I'm not sure when the Xperia Play was released in the US; the website I linked said it got the 2.3 update on May 26th, but other sources say it wasn't released in the US (on Verizon) until that date. So it may not count as an "existing" phone getting the upgrade.

The Epic 4g still doesn't have 2.3, but it's samsung.... so that's pretty much expected lol.
If motorola updates the bionic to ICS then it would be a simple port to the photon since the both are technically identical (both with the same tegra 2 chipset at 1ghz with 1gb ram and 16gb of on board storage). I'm sure the Bionic will get it first, but I'm also sure that the Photon will be right behind it.

To be fair, the Epic 4G did get one upgrade (from its launch Eclair to Froyo), but I definitely hear you on that one.
if you want to call it that.....
that phone as nice as it was....still had major issues up and down with lag and other hardware issues...
all that 2.2 release did was bring it all out...
good thing i was able to sell it back to sprint for a little over $100 to pay for the photon

LG has officially confirmed that the Optimus 2X will get ICS. The Optimus 2X is a Tegra 2 phone. LG hasn't been very good about their updates but the fact that they've made an official announcement is a big deal. The Gauntlet has been thrown for all Tegra 2 devices from all OEMs to get ICS. Motorola has been pretty damn good about updating the Photon so far. The Photon is also Sprint's big 2011 Worldphone device and their first Motorola Android phone. A non-4G variant of the Photon, the Electrify, is also out on US Cellular.
I honestly don't see why Motorola wouldn't upgrade both the Photon and the Electrify to ICS. They have everything to gain by doing so... it would go a long way to ensure that my next device is a Moto.

What's funny is, there are always skeptics that come out with statements similar to Gogators1974. I remember quite a FEW EVO owners making big claims that the EVO wouldn't be getting Gingerbread and some being skeptical that it'd be one of the first phones to be updated (not counting the phones that already had Gingerbread). But, when the time came for updates, the EVO was updated barely a month after the Droid X.
In the case of the MoPho, especially after Motorola has consistently released updates to fix little issues popping up here and there, I've never had any inkling of doubt that the MoPho would get ICS. Even beyond that, there was a press-release in May that Google is going to be very conscious of making sure that all phones would receive OS updates for top-tier Android Smartphones, for 18 months after release, assuming the handset is powerful enough to run the latest OS. I think it'd be extremely naive to think that the Tegra dual-core processor wouldn't be powerful enough to handle at least ICS.
If Google is able to stick with their statement, I'd even venture to say that the MoPho will without a doubt get ICS and furthermore receive Jelly Bean (assuming it's released within that 18 month timeframe from when the MoPho was released on July 31 and it's not so big of a change that it requires a much more powerful processor). I'm doubting that Jelly Bean will be such a huge change from ICS that the Tegra dual-core processor wouldn't be able to handle it.

I don't consider the epic 4g "updated" when Epic 4g was released almost 2 months after Froyo. IMHO It's something that the epic should've shipped with. The Epic 4g didn't get Froyo until feb of this year. (the initial roll out in january had issues and had to be halted)

I think the photon will get ICS. If I remember correctly, there was boat load of phones that motorola updated to gingerbread. It was even some phones, that sites stated wouldn't be updated to gingerbread. Hopefully Motorola will make an announcement regarding the possibility of the photon receiving ICS.
