android 4.2

if Google announces 4.2 (which is apparently still jelly bean) on the 29th will we see it on the 29th or will it be a few days or weeks or what? just curious. not really sure what 4.2 brings to the table to be honest.
 
Yes 4.2 is still jellybean.


I imagine we will get it very quickly. We had 4.1.2 same day it was announced.


However, googles event was canceled because of the hurricane, so we don't know when it'll be announced

do you guys have any clue as to what we are getting from this update?

You are probably going to have to wait a few days for the update to get to you. That is better than everyone else's that has to wait like 6 months to see if they will actually receive anything.
 
I wonder if Google will even release it then or wait until they reschedule their event they canceled.
 
the quick settings second pull down looks kinda cool. the selinux looks like it could end or deter piracy which is good but i sometimes like to try apps out for a few days before i buy them because 15min is not long enough to try apps out.

Maybe its something I'm not seeing, but why would a personal device such as a tablet need multiple user accounts for? Seeing as how damn near everybody already has smartphones (or perhaps even their own tablet), why would any third-person need to use my tablet to even REQUIRE a secondary "guest" account in the same fashion that a semi-public PC might?
 
So, now that its been officially announced, is there a date set for when the update will start rolling out?

A lot of families let their kids use their tablets, so with this, parents can just switch to a kids profile that has all their games on the home screen. That's what I would use it for if I had kids

I read mid November after the new devices are beginning to get shipped out, then Google will push the 4.2 update to its current Nexus devices out there

Actually, I have far less of an issue with a random person using my tablet, as I do an issue with my girlfriend wanting to use it a lot.

I don't care that she wants to use it, but every time I change something, it screws up how she used to interact. I reorganize my desktop, and she doesn't know where I put the shortcuts she used to use. I switch browsers, and she doesn't know where the old one went. She logs into her school email, and I log her out to check my own Gmail, or clear the cookies. She's in the middle of a game, and I can't interrupt.

I don't know exactly how many of these will be fixed by user profiles; if it just controls the homescreen layout and available apps, it may not fix things like both of us playing the same game. But there are a whole bunch of use cases for profiles that I can see for a tablet, which tends to be a more generic "whole household" device rather than a phone which is often not shared.

It saves separate progress of games too - can't find the link now, but definitely read that.

On my laptop I use multi virtual desktops. One for browsing, one for gaming, one for work, one for software development etc. I could use multi accounts to do the same on the N7. I hate clutter even if its virtual clutter so I like clean screens. I want productivity specific widgets rather than a lot of different folders laying around. Thats just me.

Also, I would feel more comfortable handing my tablet over to someone to use for 30 minutes if they were not on my account. Not to say they might do something evil like buy the entire collection of twilight memorabilia from my play account but I don't want them to accidentally delete a whole bunch of stuff.
