Help Android 4.4 (KitKat) help/discussion

Hi,
I tried to update my M7 to sense 6 but when I did the camera and gallary app disappeared, I then factory reset it and it didnt return
I can't use the play store and I'm constantly getting notifications about google plus not being installed
My phone isn't rooted
A factory reset cannot restore stuff if it's been removed - all it does is clear user data and settings.

How did you do the update? Was this an over the air update (Settings > About > Software Updates) or did you try to apply it using a computer? Knowing what you did might help someone suggest a solution.

Hey,

Ever since I updated my HTC one to Sense 6.0 I have had a problem with the auto back-up features of the Photos app as well as the "HTC Backup" app.

The Photos app is set to back up photos when there's a Wifi connection and only while charging but this never happens. All it says is "Backing up...232 left"

And on your HTC Backup app is set to automatic backup but never backs up, I have to go into the app and manually back it up.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Hi guys,

I've got one fo the the origional HTC one's and updated my phone last week after getting a system update message. Ever since then when using the text message system on the phone, writing, selecting which text thread etc its been realy sluggish responding. text can take a second to come through, if you click a thread and start typing it looses the number the text is going to, basicly it's lost its way cos of the lag.

Has anyone else had this/found a fix?

It's becoming rather anoying to say the least

Yes, here is the fix for that.
I had an issue after the Sense6 Sprint update, where Google+ wouldn't back up my photos. Finally figured out that the update had set my home wifi as a mobile hotspot for some reason, and wouldn't let some apps upload data over a mobile hotspot. Including Google+.

So you have to go into settings and tell the phone not to set your home wifi as a mobile hotspot.

Hi, I've got an HTC one, about 3 weeks ago I ran a system update, as happens from time to time, however since then my push email has stopped working, I have to go into the mail app and manually refresh, after tweeting O2 about it their advice is to back up the phone and do a factory reset.

That seems a bit sledgehammer/walnut to start off with.

I've tried changing to smart sync and every 5 minutes but it will only work with me doing it manually.

Has anyone else experience of this or any advice ?

Blink feed also isn't auto refreshing as it previously used to either

Hi, welcome to Android Forums.

Yes, I agree that a factory reset seems a bit drastic at this stage. You haven't mentioned it but have you made sure that 'Auto sync' is still enabled?

Settings - Accounts & sync, on/off toggle top right.

:)

I haven't,

I now have.

It was that.

Thank you very very much, that never occurred to me, and I'd not looked at that part of settings since getting the phone 7 months ago.

Now I think about it the exact same thing happened previously with my sensation x
E.

An annoying little occurrence.

Thanks again

How was this fixed? I cannot activate lock screen widgets as there is no listing for this in settings>security now.

Hi, my HTC One downloaded a major system update a few weeks ago (I'm now at Android version 4.4.2 and HTC Sense version 6.0).

Ever since that update installed, group SMS messages fail to download unless I have my Mobile Data on. I usually leave Data and Wifi off until I need them because it tends to waste battery.

This was never an issue for me before the update, and I get group text messages quite often, nearly every day, so I'm sure it was directly after the update that this started happening. It's very annoying, especially because they'll download out of order after enabling Data.

It also usually fails to send group messages without Data enabled, but it has worked once or twice since then.

Regular SMS messages are behaving fine, it's just group messages.

My questions are: is this a known issue for this version, is there a fix, and if not, is this issue being looked into?

Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi.

Two days ago I allowed an OTA update to bring my HTC One M7 up to 4.4.2 with Sense 5.5. It has been a nightmare since 'cos the wi-fi is big time spotty and the mobile data is even worse.

Also I'm getting barely no signal on the phone reception.

I have hard reset the phone twice getting rid of everything in the hope that it will switch me back to 4.3(or whatever was before) but I get no joy. I'm still on 4.4.2 which I am pretty sure is doing most of the damage.

Is there any way to roll back to where I was?

I just wish I had never done it.

Thanks in advance, Ste.

if you are stock and unrooted, you can NOT revert back to an older version. Rooting your device will allow you to cook your own ROM, or install another ROM.

If you decide NOT to go that route, you can try a factory reset, which should bring things back to zero, but will still have 4.4 on board.

Should you still be having hardware issues, a trip to the carrier you purchased from is in order.

Hi.

7 days ago I updated my phone(HTC One M7) to 4.4.2 OTA.

Immediately I started having issues with connectivity over wifi, 3G and "no network". It was a real mess so I decided to send my phone to HTC for them to fix it. They sent it back and they had re-installed 4.3 which makes everything work as it should. I am really happy except for one thing.

When I pull the notification bar down at the top I have a constant:

"System update available(4.4.2)"

When I press it it gives me the option to delay the install for 30 mins / 4 hours but I just want to get rid of it for good. It just stays there in the notification tray reminding me all the time.

Is there any way of getting rid of this prompt?

I just want to remain on 4.3 so my phone works right.

Is there any way in the settings I can make this go away? Maybe in the apps section? It's really beyond me, I would just love to have it go away.

Any help would be really appreciated, thanks for your time in advance,

Ste.

hi,

as has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, eventually at some point you will have to update.

the only way to get around this involves rooting your device.

Hi,

I have updated the HTC One to Android 4.4.2. The resulting bugs should be well known, but I have not even found a hint at any solutions. Is this a troublesome topic?

----- Here is my list: -----

-- the dialer. It requires Wifi to be off to make a call. If Wi-fi is on, it stops when it would ask for SIP or no SIP. It used to be sufficient to remove all SIP accounts, but no longer. Maybe it works sometimes with Wifi running, but I suspect when it ever worked, Wifi was just broken.

Is the dialer part of Android or is it HTC One specific? Are the bugs HTC one specific?

Is there any solution, an alternative dialer that accesses the standard address book, can do SIP and works?

-- Google Maps. It has been not very useful before, as it can not act in any way on any "favourites", "starred places", or addresses. Trying the "person" icon only starts a "wait forever" animation. There is now one more bug, where it just hangs after using it for 1-2 hours. Sometimes it complains it has no GPS signal when this looks bogus, sometimes the screen hangs but speech output continues, and the only fix is to kill and restart the app.

This is part of Android 4.4.2, as it is the exact same in a Samsung device.

Is there a way to install an old version of Google Maps? Is there any good alternative? Is there a way to retrieve old "starred places" including descriptions/titles and import into any other app? I'm not much of a Windows user, so I can make a script to convert text, csv, and similar files.

-- the performance (latency). The whole system has frequent latency spikes of 1-2 seconds that convert any taps to the touchscreen into holds, that means essentially that the touchscreen works incorrectly. Playing games is hard, and if the home screen weren't locked it would be messed up.

I'm not sure if this is Android specific. I guess any solution requires root.

-- the performance (speed). I guess it is somewhat slow overall. I haven't seen any performance settings. Maybe there are hidden or locked performance options that have been set to "lowest possible performance"?

-- the Wifi sometimes loses all data (2x in a few months), as if it erases wpa_supplicant.conf. This demonstrates also that "Backup all passwords etc. to Google servers" does not work, at least for the restore part. There is not even a way to manually restore.

I'm not sure if htc one specific, but I haven't seen it on any other device.

I guess the trivial solution involves root and doing something with wpa_supplicant.conf, including moving it from another device. Is there a solutionthat does not require root, like a hidden Google Restore?

-- any other common problems due to the current software?

-------

I don't care much about cosmetic or luxury problems, like if colors and styles don't match or the screen is cluttered. I think like an old style Linux/Unix user, so crashes, broken essential apps, and repeatedly doing tedious unnecessary time wasting work (wifi) are considered major problems.

any hints?
thanks

I'm a little confused: do you want to use SIP or not? You talk about removing all SIP accounts, which suggests not, but if you don't then there really should be no problem: set no SIP accounts and set "Use internet calling" to "Only for internet calls" rather than "ask for each call". Those are my settings, and I've never had any problem with WiFi on/off.

The dialer is HTC software.

I'm not sure what interactions you are looking for. On my device it can go to my starred places, or to the addresses of people in my address book. I'm not sure which "person" icon you mean (I never used the old Latitude system though, so if it's related to that I'm not the person to ask).

I've not experienced the hang-ups you describe, but don't use it for navigation very often.

There are offline mapping apps, at different prices and with different capabilities. I keep a copy of Maps.ME on my phone (formerly Maps with Me), since Maps 7's offline map caching is even more limited than Maps 6's, and I travel internationally and find it useful to have stored maps. But that one doesn't do navigation.

Never encountered this.

No, there are no such hidden settings. Again, I've not had a loss of performance.

However, I am rooted and so have more options, including the ability to wipe all caches. See the end of the post for the significance of that statement.

Again, never experienced this.

If most of these problems started after an update, there's a reasonable chance that you can fix them by doing a factory reset (after backing up important data).

Over the air updates are patches designed to be applied without data loss, but you can sometimes get conflicts which can affect performance or stability after the update. Erasing all caches (the cache partition and the dalvik cache) should fix those, but without a custom recovery you can't do the latter without a factory reset. Many people recommend a factory reset after a system update, and while I don't myself go that far if you find you are having a lot of problems like this after an update I'd certainly give it a go.

Otherwise, what network are you on? Different carrier's handsets will receive different updates, so it's possible that your problems may be specific to one network, in which case if we know which one other users with the same software may be able to compare notes.

I've had this problem ever since doing a factory reset on a HTC One M7.

I can do voice searches if I press the voice icon in the search bar, but it doesn't respond to the "OK Google" command as it did previously. The icon is 'outlined' rather than 'solid', which I believe means it isn't automatically listening, yet it is correctly enabled to in the voice settings.

I've just had the update to 4.4.3, which I was hoping would fix it - no such luck. Checked all the settings and tried US English instead of UK - still nothing.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Bunjiweb,

I'm still on 4.4.2, but my voice search is working with 'ok google' either from within the app or from any screen ie it's always listening.

Having checked all your settings, perhaps you could list them and I will check them against my settings and see if there are any differences.

:)

I updated my HTC One (M7) to 4.4.3, 6.07.1540.1. I can't charge my phone from then . First i thought it's a problem with my charger, but it's working when the phone is switched off. Cannot connect to my laptop too. Data cable also not working when the phone if switched on.

I called HTC Customer care and enquirer this, they told Phone was purchased in US and i'm using it in India, so there may be a problem because i updated in India . But i have updated many OTA Updates over the past one year. This is the first time i have faced a issue. :(

Is there a way to rollback my update to previous version. Or can i flash it with 4.4.2 OTA Image or something... I haven't played with Android before.. Please help me out here. :(

I'm willing to take the risk, but i need Sense UI. :smokingsomb:
(I can't connect to laptop as data cable also not connecting. so please suggest me a alternative methods.)

I got an update notification last night so went ahead and downloaded/installed it (4.4.3/6.09.401.5)

All went without a hitch as all previous updates have. When I read through a detailed review of the changes, one of the things referred to was the notification light.

For quite a few months my notification light has been working only for the battery charge function, for everything else it was dead. I don't know exactly when this happened, I've always assumed it was following either an app installation or a previous OS update. I tried a wipe cache partition to no avail but I wasn't bothered about it enough to try a factory reset, which may or may not have cured it.

I've just enabled flash for messages, alarm and mail and it's working again!! :D:D

Update :

I've also now discovered that the led flashing is not limited to 5 minutes as it used to be.

Thanks for the detailed answer.

Dialer: I'm looking for SIP and no SIP is only the first part. I'll look for a replacement

Maps: I have an old device with disabled updates and an old version of Maps which works fine. I tried the "person" icon again. Last time it must have been a hang up or network problem. It showed "nearby saved places", saved places and recent destinations. The nearby saved places is of limited use. The complete saved places list is thoroughly shuffled, without "distance to destination", and older places are numeric lon/lat without titles. The old Maps shows these places as always.

However, I found I can navigate from the address book with multiple apps, so I have to store favourites in the address book to make them work with any navigation app (for now).

My handset is without any carrier branding, I bought it and use an unlocked sim card.

So I guess any complete solution involves rooting or at least an equivalent amount of effort.

I purchased a unlocked htc one m7 google phone, I have a metroPCS service which I activated to my new HTC device... there reads no networks available what would be the Appropiate APN settings

Hi, I started the update for the htc one, however I lost wifi connection half way through. now when It constantly boots tself and stays on the white htc 1 screen you get when starting. Help?

This is my first Android phone after coming from Blackberry forever. I had this happen with Blackberry and I was able to reload the operating system using the BB desktop software. HTC desktop software has a backup feature so maybe this is possible by opening the software on the computer and booting the phone while it is plugged in. I'm no expert at all so hopefully someone will confirm if this will work BEFORE you try this or if there is another solution. Good luck and post your findings once you are back up.
