Help android convert from iphone...

what exactly does that mean and/or do? and i hear a lot about 'dev' who/what is dev?

They're usually a who, but I suspect some are a what :D

By dev, he means developer, but specifically, some folks make changes to a phone, beyond just resources (like fonts, icons, etc.). They take the original kernel source code and modify and recompile it. When you get to that level of control, you can make very low level changes to the OS, modify specific code areas like the radio modules, file system, etc.

Most "devs" don't get that low level, but put together components from different phones, or from different model variants (like using the international SGS libraries on a US carrier specific model like a Captivate).

Basically it's kind of a catch all for anyone doing any sort of modifications, but tends to be more in the context of the folks doing the low[er] level stuff.

What's the exact android version number on SGSII? The next major update for WiFi fix could be like from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, but not necessary major OS update like going to 2.4.

Actually, with the (international) SGS1, Samsung has released updates without changing the Android version number. But 2.3.4 wouldn't be surprising either.

mines on 2.3.3. brand new out of the box today. how often do they normally do any updates?

thanks for the explanation DT :) Sort of makes sense lol

Personally I never bother using wifi. I don't see the point in using another piece of hardware when I alway have decent 3g/h speed as it is.

If a low wifi signal is pretty much your only issue, then things can't be that bad. And I'm sure samsung will patch that soon enough.

Wifi is useful because it is usually much faster than 3G inside a building and has much stronger signal. It also uses far less battery because 3G can eat batteries up quick, one of the main reasons why people's battery life vary so much in different signal areas. The 3G to wifi passover and vice-versa seems pretty non-disruptive, so a lot of people have both on.

I have, after returning to the office, now noticed that there is certainly an issue with the WiFi signal strength compared to my old HTC Desire.

Couple of things though:

1. Don't listen to reps on the phone, they actually know nothing.

2. This is not something that will be fixed in 2.4, if it's a well known issue, expect the fix in weeks.
