Android Internal Storage Problem

Xenor

For months now I have been getting the message "Phone storage space is getting low" or even worse, full and blocking texts. This has gotten more frequent to the point where it is now every day.

Normally I would just clear the cache on the Facebook and Google Maps apps to get rid of it, but I have reached the point where even that is no longer enough.

All apps that can be moved to SD card have been moved, and very little remains on the internal storage. I decided to investigate last night and downloaded some apps that let you browse the internal storage.

It seems my apps are not being moved across to the SD card properly. For example I moved Skype across last night, which was about 15mb in size. Yet this app is still taking up over 14mb on my internal storage. The phone says it is on the SD however, so does Apps 2 SD and other tools I've downloaded to try diagnose my storage issue.

It seems my phone has a /mnt/asec directory that is keeping hold of all my install files for all my apps. The files are pkg.apk files. You would think that when I move an app to the SD card that these .apk files would go with it, freeing up space on the internal storage but no. Moving apps to my SD card has just been an illusion the whole time I've had my phone.

I can't even delete these .apk files because when I do they are instantly re-created.

So what can I do to solve my storage problems? I don't want to resort to uninstalling apps. My phone (ZTE Blade) only has about 200mb internal storage so it's not even a case of me trying to have tonnes of apps. I just want them on my SD card properly, with their pkg.apk files residing on my SD card with them.

I imagine they have gone this way because when I download an app it puts it on to the internal phone storage and then it has to be moved across. Is there not a way to download apps from the market directly to the SD card? I don't mind re-installing everything if it will be a viable solution but I can't find a way to download to SD.

I must add that I am running Android 2.2 and my phone is rooted.

Since you are rooted, have you partitioned the sdcard? This would probably solve your storage issues

And maybe a guide or mod could move this because I wonder if your recovery allows this and then you could use something like darktremor's a2sd or something similar.

I don't think I did partition the SD card because it worked fine when I slotted it in a year ago. How would partitioning it solve the storage issues? I mean my phone already thinks it is moving the apps across and the SD works fine with my files on it. But I am willing to do just about anything to solve this problem as I don't want to buy a new phone anytime soon.

After doing a little searching, I found this link over on xda in the Blade section http://android.modaco.com/topic/331205-guide-how-to-get-more-free-space-for-your-apps/ Hope this helps:)
