Android Live Scores

Some more testing today. Updates were great during both the Football Giants and Baseball Rays games.

The only thing was that I don't think I got a start game notification for either, I got an end game notification for the Giants late and I don't think I ever got one for the Rays.

So, score updates, great. Could be a problem with start/end notifications.

Either way, I got NO duplicate notifications (when there's no change in score) like I did with Sportstap. I like this program. Sportstap drove me nuts when it kept throwing up system notifications when there was no score change. Their support is absolutely non-existent. Very happy to be able to move away from them now.

I am so glad this is now on other android phones. My buddy with the original droid had this and i wanted it so bad. He even tried to bump it to me.

You should take a look at google's scoreboard app, it puts a notification line with almost live score, time and play. It was my backup to this app.. But now i will try both to see which is best.

been using this app for a while now, great for keeping up with games when not in front of the tv!! keep up the good work

I'm subscribed to the Ducks vs Red Wings game too. I'm not in the app and I'm getting alerts, currently 3 to 0, but I don't know how far behind they are because I'm not watching the live game.

When you got the alert 10 minutes after the goal, were you in the app or did it work outside of the app?

... Yep - Just looked at the log... It seems mine aren't always running on schedule... somewhere between 3 and 15 minutes... Okay its a bug - I'm on it right now.

Thanks for taking a look into that.

The application was open, but I was not in the app. I am not running any task killers or anything. Also, was watching the game live, thats how I noticed the score/time differential.

Also, was following a few NCAA Football games on Saturday, and those alerts seem to come in within a few minutes of the score happening.

I loved Sportacular on my iPhone. That is really one of the apps I have missed most since switching to Android. The biggest thing I miss is notifications. I know push notifications on iPhone are great for apps like this, but isn't something similar available on Froyo?

I am going to download this now and give it a shot. I'll be giving my feedback here, glad I saw this thread!

I made some tweaks to the alerts configuration, seems like that resulted in better alert response. More to come!

Go Giants!

Niice. Our goal is to catch Android Live Scores up with iPhone Sportacular... "MY" goal is to make Android Live Scores even better. ;)

Same question. I thought I read the other day that Froyo has some sort of new/special push notification system that would improve this type of app. Aaron, do you know anything about that or what that could do for this type of app?

Also, did Google Scorecenter always have system alerts? I thought I tried it before and don't remember seeing that. I'll set that up to compare things.

Hope you don't mind all the posting here.

I'm monitoring the Islanders hockey game today. No start of game notification, no 1-0 notification, but I did get notified of 1-1. The 2nd goal was shortly after the first, so it's possible that it was 1-1 before live scores checked for an update. I did just get the 2-1 notification as well.

Still think something isn't quite right for start/end game notifications.

I also tried out google scoreboard today. Couple of things I like, a couple I don't like and a dealbreaker.

With scoreboard, Score/start/end updates appear to be working great. I like that I get different notification icons depending on sport. Nice touch, especially when games in multiple sports are going on at the same time. Should be easy to implement that. I also like that different sports have different notification options (baskeball is start, end, once per qtr or twice per qtr, hockey is start, end, each period or each score, etc.). I know you said that was already on your list.

As far as the don't likes with scoreboard, when there is a score update and you click on it, it brings you into the app to a screen that just gives the score. I don't see any easy/quick way to get good stats on the game. The dealbreaker though is that on notifications, it doesn't light up the notification light on my Droid X. I can only see that there's a notification if I turn on the phone.

Deleting scoreboard.

Hopefully, you've got some sort of list going here :)

Most important thing to me though is that the notifications work properly.

Thanks again for listening!

Ok, I have my favorite teams set up and alerts on for NCAAFB, NFL, and MLB. I am going to evaluate it for a week and then give my feedback.

One early recommendation is that we can disable some sports so they don't show up on the list when changing sports, for example I don't and won't ever care about soccer, I don't need any soccer leagues on my list when I change sports.

After a day of use and just getting my first game notification here are some ideas:

1. Option for pop up that can be set for each alert type (start, end, score, etc)
2. Notification sound that can be changed, possibly change notification light color also?

-I didn't even know I had a notification until I turned on my screen and looked at the notification bar, and I would just prefer the pop up option because it was nice having that as a push notification on iPhone.

3. More alert options: end of innings, quarters, etc
4. An alert before game time (15 min, 1 hr, just something) as opposed to just at the start.

I don't know if you could do this but it would be awesome if the app could sync to the calendar and put your favorite team's schedule on the calendar. That would just be awesome!

Yeah, we've been talking about using the new push for 2.2. For now our code doesn't support 2.2 yet. We compile against 1.6 for backwards compatibility but we're going to have to start adding support for 2.2 to take advantage of new features like App->SD.

I remember scorecenter having alerts for awhile - about the same time we got them.

I just switched everyone over to the new Alerts server polling at 2 minute intervals for now. Should be 100% operational - let me know what you think.

This is a test, we may revert back to the old server depending no how this one takes the load.

I appreciate everyone's input, I'm literally taking your comments and adding them to our feature/bug tracking system to ensure they get addressed.

Tried it over the weekend, not too bad. Has some minor issues and no widget but since that is being worked on I will continue to use it for now. Looks promising...

Can you not change/customize the alert notifications? I saw no option, that's pretty important to me since the default on my captivate is terrible.

Will keep an eye on it. You think 2 minute polling won't be too much of a drain on the battery?

Looking forward to seeing some of the ideas worked into the program.

1. What are popups exactly?
2. Agree
You mention you didn't notice you have a notification until you turned on the screen, but you are aware that you get a light notification, so I'm a little confused there. For me, the light notification is great. I don't have to turn the screen to look on unless it's lit. I think that's enough. Google scoreboard didn't turn on the light and that was a dealbreaker for me there.
3. Agree. Different options for different sports. Aaron said that's been worked on.
4. Really is same as 3 and I guess would be ok, but might just have too many options then.

Team Schedules in calendar is already something you can get directly from google and is built into google calendar. Go into your calendar settings, click calendars. Then in other calendars, click browser interesting calendars.

-Pop UPS are a dialog box that would pop up on the screen, like a pop up from SMS if you use handcent or chomp.

-I can't see the light if the phone is face down or in my pocket. I miss just a vibration a lot when there is no sound also. Just needs to be an option.

-Sport calendars on your Google calendar do not sync to your phone, that has been discussed a lot on here, and is a known defect with Google calendar . For a while I had found a work around using a yahoo calendar synced to Google which would then sync to my phone, but that quit working also.

100% but it wont be in the next release, maybe the next though.

Here is what I would like to see in a widget:
1. Ability to select favorite teams and have them show up first and maybe highlight them a different color.
2. Have the ability to select different sports from the widget.
3. Ability to set scroll rates and refresh rates.
4. Ability to change the day to the previous day's scores or current day.
5. It shouldn't be too big. I love the ScoreMobile widget but it is too big and the colors are ugly.

Thanks.

That's a good point. We have talked about changing the sound, but for now its just the default. You can turn on vibration for alerts via Live Scores->Menu->Alert Settings.

I'm realizing that the lack of "Instructions" for the app has caused some confusion, let me add that to my todo list.

Will keep an eye on it. You think 2 minute polling won't be too much of a drain on the battery?

Naa, I run 30 sec polling on my phone (sorry guys developer privilege) ;)
According to my testing, I've let it run at 30sec polling for 48 hours with a bunch of game subscriptions and as long as I didn't go into the app, Live Scores never showed up on the list of apps under the battery monitor. However it does show up if I'm in the app a lot but thats going to happen for any app and unrelated to the alert polling interval. And just to be safe, the alerts system is only polling while the game is in progress.

A configurable polling interval is also in the plan, but the minimum interval has to be a number that is long enough that doesn't overrun our servers. If everyone had their phones set to 30 seconds, we would see 6x more server load. As we allocate more machines to alerts processing, we will start to offer faster polling intervals.

I have been using your Live Scores app for a while now. I made the switch from the ESPN app and have never looked back. However, I do have some suggestions to improve your software. Please excuse me if these things have been mentioned before as I only scanned through a lot of the other suggestions and either didn't see them or would like to reiterate what these people have suggested.

At first, I was upset that there was no score update widget that came with your app, but you quickly fixed this complaint by adding the score update feature. I would still love to be able to set some kind of an alert tone to go along with the vibration of the score updates. Perhaps even a custom tone for every team I am subscribed to, and a default tone for unassigned teams.

For years, before I purchased my Android, I had been getting score update alerts from Yahoo! via text message through their yahoo mobile services. I was able to finally cancel this text messages thanks to your program, but was kind of upset to find that there weren't as many score update options. For example, when I wanted to know the score of a baseball game, I used to get text updates at the end of every inning (or the end of every 3 innings, depending on the game) regardless of scoring. So, if a team scores 8 runs in an inning (or football team scores 21 points in a quarter), that update would only be sent to me at the end of the inning/quarter unless I also choose to have "score updates" selected. The updates at the end of an inning help quell the "is the app working?" worries when there is a game where nobody scores for a while. Having the ability to customize these alerts would be great. People might want the ability to see the status of the game in their alerts window, updated every 30 seconds or every minute. They will know how many outs there are or what yardline the ball is on without having to open the app.

I notice that an option for Nascar updates/results is missing. I notice you addressed adding additional sports in your original posting. I hope Nascar is on this list - that would be great.

I would love to see team/league logos next to the team/league names. It would make it easier to pick out a certain game in a list of 20. I realize there are probably copyright issues here, but since you are backed by Yahoo!, itmight not be as big of a deal as I am thinking.

One small annoyance that I have had when using your program is that the "Select Sport" button on the baseball menu is located in the center of the bottom row. When I switch to NFL, that button is located in the bottom row, but it now appears on the left side. Just a small user interface thing, but can be quite annoying.

Another small annoyance is that there is no "today" button to use when I find myself scrolling through next weekend's games and want to quickly return to today's listings. The today button should disappear or turn a different color when I am on the current day - this would help confirm things for the user who has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. *ahem* That would be a great little shortcut to have. Also, the day of the week should appear next to the date (Sun, Mon, Tues, etc.). This way, I know I am looking at the right day's scores.

I would love to see a "homepage" that the program can be set to load when I open the app. This would be in addition to having the option to set something like "NFL" or MLB" as your default start page. What the homepage would do is feature scores of my favorite teams and teams that I have alerts set for, regardless of what sport/league they are in. I will give you an example of why this would be a great improvement. Say my favorite hockey team and my favorite baseball team are both playing games at the same time. I want to follow along with both games using the Live Score app. I currently need to open the Live Score app, select "NHL", scroll to my team and open that. When I want to see what is happening during the other game, I need to press "menu>select sport>MLB", then find the game on the list and select it. Want to switch back? Well... you see what I am getting at. If the homepage was implemented, I would be able to follow both games from that window. If I want more details on one of the games, I could tap it. Want to switch? Easy... press the back button and tap the other game.

In addition to this last request, would it be possible to add some kind of a "tabbed browsing" type of feature, so you could follow more than one game at a time. When you are following more than one active game, the tabs would appear on the top or side (with the current scores on them) - you can just press one or the other to switch between games that you are viewing.

I would love to see the added ability to view the upcoming schedule of a certain team (or all of my favorite teams on the same schedule). Perhaps the option of a list view or a calendar view could be used for this?

In addition to that, it would be nice to see what TV networks (home, away, national) are carrying the game you are looking at.

Since you are backed by Yahoo - I would love to see a link to the article that Yahoo has on that game. Either a pregame preview or a postgame writeup would be a great option to have. If the browser has to launch for this type of thing, so be it, but I would love to see the ability to view this text from within the app. The pregrame preview article would be the default thing you see when you select a game that hasn't started yet. The postgame recap would be the first thing that you see when you select a game that has already ended.

One additional note that I have which isn't a suggestion, but a possible bug you might want to look into. On Sunday, I was following along with the Eagles/49ers NFL game. 49ers was listed on the top scoreboard properly, but every time there was an update on the last play or field position, the 49ers were referred to as "TEN." For example, it would say: "Ball on TEN 32 yard line" instead of "Ball on SF 32 yard line." I must have checked myself about 10 times, because I thought I had selected the "Tennessee Titans" game instead of the Eagles/49ers.

Thanks a lot for your time in developing this app and reading these comments. Let me know if you have any questions or feedback on my suggestions. I will certainly let you know if I have any more suggestions for your application.

Tonight was a good (and interesting) test. Avs/Red Wings and Nuggets/Timberwolves. The Avs/Wings scored 9 goals and the alerts were perfect, but the basketball alerts were way too often. THAT's where I wish there were just quarterly or break updates. Basketball every 2 mins is a bit much. Sometimes there's no score change at all, but if that's between quarters, that would be nice to know. Every 5 mins would be a great option, or let the users pick 2, 5, 10, quarters/periods, etc.

I've seen GREAT improvements on updates being pretty timely as far as I'm concerned.

Also, I like the vibrate option. When I have my phone in my pocket, and my wife and I are out to eat, at a party or doing something with the kids, it's great to know there's an update when someone scores. The sound or chime each time could get annoying. But of course, that woudl be a user option.

Thanks for the update on the scoring, I think with such an active developer and an already good app this is going to turn out to be great.

Agreed. I'm excited. Hopefully we'll start seeing some of our suggestions in action soon :)

Great updating during the Rays game tonight too. Everything right on time and accurate.
