Android Market Share(beats iphone) but apple disagrees

I was reading that the Android OS has passed the Apple IOS for users. Apple goes on to say that it is not a good reading because they feel that doesn't include Ipod touch, and Ipad users. The part that I don't think Steve Job's and the crew understand is, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT CELL PHONES. Not MP3 players, or Tablets. While we are at it, lets through in MacBook's as well, and they will clearly be in control of the world. I really don't understand how the Ipod Touch, and Ipad factor in to cell phones, now I understand that the Ipad is 3G capable, but we are going phone for phone.

I see what you are saying but it is not phone for phone it is platform for platform or OS for OS. If it was phone for phone there is not an android phone that comes close to matching the iPhone in sales.

I could see it it argued that the iPad not be included but it is what it is.

I understand the arguement and I think tablets should be included. Hopefully there will be some killer Android tablets released soon that help close the gap. For example, if the Notion Ink Adam is ever released (please don't let it be just vaporware), we would want those numbers included.

I suppose I could see the arguement. I'm not an android fan boy, and I don't dislike Apple, however, I do believe the Iphone, Ipad, and Ipod touch are all over rated.

Mac vs PC is in the same boat. When they say PC, what they really mean is Windows OS. So you can't say Mac vs PC's and not have Iphones vs Androids.

Phones to phones is the important metric. Why? because most of the world doesn't have a computer but even they have cell phones. That's why it is the biggest growth market.
The kind of applications will be different since a phone is something that is always connected (unless you are on AT&T...) and can be with you at all times.

What about tablets that work on 3g like the iPad and other soon to be released Android tablets? They aren't phones, aren't really computers, and they work on existing cell networks.

That is why they have to be lumped together IMHO. The lines distinguishing computers from phones is becoming greyer each day.

When it comes to application development, developers look for the best market.

OS marketshare in this scenario is more important than Smartphone marketshare. If you are trying to sell your OS to developers, # of downloads/day is more important than # of activations/day.

They aren't something you can have with you at all times. They are nice fun things to have and there's definitely a market for them but it's not as big as the potential global market for cell phones.
