Root Android Mobile Access Point?

SacredBloodlin

So, I noticed that my wifes phone, also a Samsung Admire, has an app called "Mobile AP" with a wifi-like symbol. When activated, I noticed that this is a wireless access point app in the phone, an app that has not been in ANYONES release of a new rom of any kind. If a built in router is part of this phones hardware, how come no one has added this feature in aftermarket roms?

On a partially unrelated note, is anyone having troubles with the GPS antenna? My navigation is only working using cell tower triangulation.

Thanks :)

I didn't think so, either, but the app is there and when I turn it on, I activated wifi and connected to it through my phone. If necessary I can take pics or something of the phones side by side and show what I am doing. lol

Try pulling the APK from the phone, and posting it here. It might be of use to us.

IF YOU CAN~~~~

Make a CWM Backup of the phone,

factory reset, and see if the app is there.

IF it is, post the CWM Backup, and we can check it.

I wouldn't want to go through your wifes phone.

The Admire I have, has the metroPCS Easy WiFi app, as part of the factory install. It lets the phone connect to WiFi networks. I've never heard of Mobile AP and my phone does not have that.

Yeah, I can do that. Now, the wife obviously wants to keep her current setup but I also want to make a stock backup that we all can use on req's CWM. Can I do that by rooting it and then installing his CWM and making a backup there? That way I can also use the rom and see if the app works on my phone as well. After its all said and done I can restore her backup and she'll be good to go.

As far as uploading the rom, it might take me a while since I am tethering my phone using the "CWM Easy Tether (no root)" to get internet.

You don't need root for CWM, just install Sue's via ODIN, then upgrade to Req's. Backup, take it off the SD, then upload. Then you can revert to the stock recovery.

This app came with the stock 2.3.6 ROM offered by Samsung that originally did not work with our Admire or rather broke Data/MMS.

So, we have the hardware for a wireless router but no one can make it work?

Also, should I decide to revert to stock with a guaranteed nTelos rom, do I install Sue's through Odin, then install reqs CWM Recovery and Kernel package found in his CM7 thread before making a backup? Just trying to make sure I do this right without screwing up her phone. She might be a little mad, lol.

Yes, you are correct.

Ok, so I know this might not be the best place for this issue, but I used Odin to install CWM, booted into CWM, then installed req's CWM from the CM7 post on top of it and now when I reboot the phone it sits at the tiny "ANDROID" screen and doesnt reboot. Any ideas to get this to boot right? O.o

EDIT: Never mind. I could never get the help I needed and now she is the proud owner of Stock++. Oh well, we'll be getting internet back soon so it won't really matter. :)
