Help Android newbie in need of help!!

Hello

I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Gio today. I am a complete newbie with Android phones and i realise this probably sounds stupid, but please help me!

Basically when i make a phone call, at first the screen with the in-call functions such as turning the speaker on/off, using the keypad during a call etc.. appears, but then after about 2 seconds it just disappears and goes back to the home screen i don't know how to get back into it so i can access the in-call functions, or even just end the call! How can i make it stay there? Help!

It should not go back to home screen while in call mode unless you press home key. Mine does not go.

In case it does, just pull down the notification bar and tap the left most phone icon.
