Root Android noob help

hey guys, ive had my htc incredible for over a year now and have finally decided to root my phone. however, i recently just accepted ota 2.3.4 update and have been reading some posts that it cannot be rooted, unless downgraded. If i downgrade and root can i still install and use 2.3.4? If so please send me a hyperlink of how to do so. Currently on 2.3.4...if i need to downgrade tell me how please. thanks!
 
Yes, it's rootable and you can put any version of Android on it you want. There is a sticky at the top of this forum with instructions.
