Help android OS freezing, doing strange things. how to fix?

My OS on my phone has been acting up and I don't know how to fix it. I've thought of backing all of my stuff somehow and then reinstalling the OS (somehow) but dont know if that will do anything.

Sometimes when I pull the notification thing down it gets locked up and flickers between an image of the window pulled down and when it is up.

Also, the other day when I got a call the screen was purple artifacts and didn't go away until I turned the phone iff and back on.

Another instance of strange behavior is when I make a call, it sometimes gets where if I get my finger anywhere near the screen it immediately goes black (where its just supposed to do that when a larger object is in front of it, like your face when you're actually talking on the phone)

Are these just current Android problems (HTC incredible) or should I find out how to reinstall?

Personally, it sounds like your phone's hardware has gone south.

However, I agree you'll want to try a software fix first.

Few problems are solved by a re-install, unless you recently updated your phone and then had this trouble.

More phones are fixed by a hard reset than anything else. Here's the full instruction and explanation for another HTC model, it's good whether you run Froyo or not, and might only be off by which menu option gets you to the reset on your phone.

I am not really sure. Given the unusual quality of the symptoms and my own experience with the Droid Incredible, it should not be happening. I never seen or experienced those symptoms described. There is a real possibility your phone might be having some hardware issues. It maybe in the process of breaking down. I suggest bringing it to your Verizon rep.

I have a little bit of hesitation after updating a few apps:
Google Earth - Google Maps - ChompSMS - Picasa - Tasker

Not sure which one is causing the trouble. When I say hesitate, I mean like the Droid Eris where it does what you want it to do but it gets delayed about 1-2 seconds.
