Android OS high usage

Since upgrading to Siyah 2.6.7 I was really happy with my battery. I got around 38 hours use out of a single charge, so was really happy that this lasted my 2 days.

I plugged my phone in to charge last night & today thought i'd get the same amount of use from the phone, however my battery is already down to 64% after only 7 hours of use.

I have done less texting, made less phone calls & played less games. The only thing I have used differently is the wifi file transfer pro app, to send some videos to my PC.

I've noticed that my Android System has used 29% & Android OS has used 27% (screen is on 20%). I cant remember which way around it was yesterday, but either the system or OS was running at 5% tops.

Does anyone know why I would get the big increase in usage?

My money's on the Wi-Fi transfer app.

Install BetterBatteryStats from the Market and this will help you pinpoint your battery drain:-

Also, go to... Settings > Applications > Running services and see what app's are currently running. You may have, "bloatware", on your phone. See here:-

Thanks Ironass.

The only thing that looks out of place, to me anyway, is this...

Which to me look like some big kernel wakelocks.

It depends on whether you were using Wi-Fi or not.

My Wi-Fi is, "on", 24/7 but only, "Awake", part of that time as in..

Settings > Wireless and network >Wi-Fi settings > Menu > Advanced > Wi-Fi sleep policy...

I have it set to, "Never when plugged in".

It does seem that your wlan_rx_awake is high.

It seems that you may have something keeping it awake.

Sit tight... hawker will be by in a mo to cast his expert eye over this... pretty please! :D

Just remembered, there was another app called power control that I installed. It was set to turn wifi off and back on at set times.

I'm hoping it's an issue with one of these and have frozen them both in titanium. Drain still seems as bad, but hopefully a full test tomorrow will show better results

Nothing obvious springs to mind yet.
download my data manager and see if an app is actually using your wifi connection where perhaps you think it shouldn't be.

What are your partial wake locks like?

Here's an update on my issue.

I've installed my data usage app and the only one that seems to be excessive is the phandroid app. Barely used it & its downloaded 4.9mb (which is nothign to worry about, I guess). Everything else seems fine.

My battery drain is still there, but not as bad as yesterday. BBS says..

wlan_rx_wake is at 1h52mins
svnet is at 49m
sec-battery-monitor is at 31m
wlan_wake is at 29m

Only change from yesterday is that i've removed the power schedule app completely (I froze it in titanium, but not sure this worked as I was still draining at the same rate).

I changed my wifi sleep policy to 'never when plugged in', but this seemed glitchy. It seemed glitchy as whenever I was turning my phone on the H network symbol was showing then the wifi on icon would appear. The sleep policy was definitely set to 'never when plugged in', rather that 'when screen is off'.

Would changing my kernel help? Im using the latest 2.6.7, which addressed the wifi problems.

Thought it was going well, but still getting the wlan kernel wakelock.

I've upgraded to siyah 2.6.8 and thought all was going well. Then, as you can see below, the wakelock kicks in.

Forgive my potential ignorance but where is this data manager app of yours?

Firstly, check if Mobidia Technology's My Data Manager :) is detecting any applications that are eating up your wifi.

Also, as you are having this seemingly constant wifi, check your settings as suggested in ironass' first post above. it may help to set your sleep policy to "when screen turns off" but be careful, as depending on if an app is actually using wifi, this might force the app to use a data connection instead.

other things to try are:

check your email update frequency setting, and any networked based widgets such as weather/news etc.

check your accounts and sync settings. I always untick auto-sync.

if you do not use the samsung app store for anything, set your samsung apps notification to "off"

set software udpdate to off in "about phone"

Cheers Hawker.

Mobidia's My Data Manager didnt show anything out of the ordinary.

I normally have wifi on all the time & before this problem turned up, could easily get 30 hours from my normal usage. My setting is set to never - i've read negative posts about having it set to when screen turns off, as apparently it uses more battery.

I only use gmail as an email app, so have no option to control its frequency. I dont use any networked based widgets either.

I've unticked my auto-sync option. It's been off for around an hour & looks promising.

Samsung app store was already turned to off

cant access the software update. when pressed the 'button' just highlights, without going into it.

I've noticed in BBS kernel wakelocks that there is a "deleted_wake_locks" item that has been active for 16h 30m 32s. Not sure what that is though.

I've changed my modem to KPA and the battery seems to be getting some great use again.

3h 30m with a 2% drop in battery this morning. I flashed the modem yesterday morning and was left with 57% when I plugged it in at night.

Presumably I had a problem with the old modem.
