Root Android Questions

Hi,
I'm new to android and recently bought a samsung vibrant.
I've got few questions about the android.
Can you guys tell me what Voodoo, Overstock, Bionix, Rom , Kernels etc are???
Obviously I'm not real technical, I understand that android is special because it's open source and people can " root" their phones- meaning they can access the hidden critical system files.

can someone lay it out in layman's terms of different things that are mentioned on the board please?

Thanks!
