Android Security

Hi,
I am new to using Android Market.
I have a Samsung Captivate. I downloaded the golf gps GOLFLOGIX.
I am having a bad time trying to install it.
I get a message saying
For Security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market.
Is there a way to shut off this security for a few minutes to download this App?
Thanks for your help.
Chris

go to Settings/Applications and check "Unknown sources". u can leave this checked, its quite alright as long as u know wat ur installing :)

What you are talking about is "sideloading".

Normally it is an option to allow apps to install from unknown sources, however AT&T chose to disable this on the Captivate. There are ways to do this and you can read about them here in the Cap FAQs.

apologies, i thought that setting was the same on all android phones :)

Unfortunately AT&T feels the need to nanny us and exert more control than the other carriers, so they've been disabling this standard Android feature on their phones.

The good news is, besides there being ways around it (such as outlined in the provided link above), AT&T is showing signs of reversing their stance, not only for new phones but even on some older phones. Guess the pressure finally built up enough and they gave in.

More likely that it was so easy to get around that their efforts were ineffective. They decided to save the development cost of altering Android to block outside market apps and try and spin it into a goodwill gesture.

Not that I fault them for it, mind you.
