I noticed that the default keyboard has the emoticons, but the SMS client doesn't display them. Is there a way to enable it?

Mine has it and I didn't change anything from the default. It doesn't show when you are typing in the To field but as soon as you go to where it says "Enter message here" the emoticon button turns to a :-) Press and hold and it shows more emoticons.

But I want it to show as

not :-)

The problem here is that the receiving phone has to have the character set has to support it.

I understand that. I just want it to display on my phone. I know the icons exist on the phone; they appear when you press the emoticon button on the default keyboard. It's just a matter of displaying them in the conversation window.

I have the same issue. It just shows :-) but shows the actual emoticon on my wife's Inspire. When she sends me emoticons I just see the characters instead of the faces. any solution for this?

I noticed this too but not enough to post about it since I dont really use emoticons. I see however that it works fine and as the OP wants it to on my Nexus One.

Dont know why the disparity.

If you use Go SMS Pro (Free) you can add the Go SMS Emoji plugin. Works when sending to anyone who has Emoji installed, IPhone included.
