Root Android System Recovery has no options

Newbie
I have a Droid X rooted, with Apex 2.0 RC2. I was about to jump into my first SBF, but first needed to check to see if all was in order. I started Android System Recovery (Power+Home) and got as far as the screen with the green Droid guy and the Triangle. When I press the search button nothing happens. No buttons work and I needed to pull the battery before I could reboot. Any idea how I can remedy this? I wanted to prepare for the possibility of being stuck in a boot loop.
I'm another one of those "newbie" folks, trying to get a little smarter about all this. Thanks,

Did you try those steps again after your battery pull? Just curious, if you are doing an sbf why are you trying to boot into stock recovery first? Doing an sbf should fix all your problems by restoring everything back to stock.

Yes I did all those things after the battery pull with the same results. What i did NOT do is hold both volume keys down at the same time. I did not know that Gingerbread does it that way, and Froyo uses the search key. Well, I guess I'm learning. I was going back to Froyo because I wanted to try the new Apex 2.0 RC3 and I can't do that from Gingerbread.
