Root Android system recovery help

My first real post since the introduction

I'm a noob to all this, so any insight to the steps I took will be greatly appreciated.

I just recently purchased a Samsung Vibrant and started to play with it. I downloaded all the necessary drivers and I rooted it using a method I found online here with success. After playing for a few days, I decided I'd take on the task of updating to Froyo.

So I found method 1 on youtube along with another method I found online which is where I start to get all messed up.

Attempt #1: I was able to get into download (vol up and down + power) mode and connected using odin. After I pressed start it got stuck on the 'file analysis' part of the flash. So I unplugged it and got some weird connection exclamation icon. An hour passed and after a billion times trying to get it back into download mode I prevailed! Then I was able to go about installing froyo again.

Attempt #2: So this time, everything supposedly worked out with odin. It had showed the green installation bar and went ahead to reset on its own. This is where I am stuck :-( When it rebooted, it showed Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 and goes to the Android system recovery <3e>

Now I'm totally lost and unable to reboot into download mode to fix anything. The up volume button moves my selection down and the down volume moves my selection up. The power button doesn't select anything. When I press the menu button, all the text disappears.

Weird thing is when I have odin started, it can read the phone and gets hung up on 'file analysis'

Hey, I personally don't know the answer to your question. Try the xda-developers forum, they know a lot there.

Another thing, You said you are a nooby, I dunno if its very wise to root your phone as a nooby and install froyo. Sure rooting may be easy, but bricking your phone is possible. Just enjoy your 500 dollar phone, wait for samsung to release froyo. If you really wanna play around with a phone, buy a used G1 from ebay, and experiment on that.

I hope your phone isn't permanently messed up.

Well, I also have the same problem as you for the first time but not so bad as you. The solution is bfore you upgrade your phone, you must on the "USB Debugging" at Setting/Application/Development.

Follow these steps to a T

Fix 1:
1. Download Eugenes 'Froyo that does not brick' file.
2. Extract the files.
3. Open Odin, plug in your phone, then put it into download mode.
4. load the PIT file in appropriate area.
5. load the .tar file in the PDA area.
6. DO NOT check 're-partition'.
7. Click start, let it finish. Your phone will load and reboot into stock recovery. It will error out again. DONT panic! This is what's supposed to happen.
8. Now, pull your battery.
9. Download the 'True stock 2.1 firmware for the vibrant'.
10. Extract the files.
11. Once again, open Odin, plug in your phone, put into download mode.
12. Load the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area.
13. THIS TIME you want to check the 're-partition' box.
14. Now click start, let it finish, and this time your phone will load up just fine! BAM!
