Help Android Version - Not Updating?

Hi folks, I was hoping someone might be able to help me.

I have a Galaxy S4, GT-I9505, Was on the Three network but has since been made Sim-Free(Unlocked)

The phone will not update beyond Android Version 4.2.2, I thought that the latest version was 4.4.2, as my friend has that version.

I have tried updating using the phone itself, just says "The latest updates have already been installed" And I have tried doing it through Samsung Kies, but to no avail either.

Is this model of the S4 not updating to 4.4.2, or if it is, do I do it manually some other way I might not be aware of?

I would be extremely grateful for any help or advice on the subject, thank you.

You wont be able to update til u lock device . or u can get the update and flash in Odin . but you will need to do a carrier unlock again . this is the reason they say update then unlock

Hello and welcome to Android Forums EaglesManiac87! :)

Thank you for your post.

There are currently 28 different models of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and over 1,000 different stock Samsung firmware versions, worldwide, covering 3 different Android platforms. Not all issues will affect all models or firmware releases and your answers to the following questions will help in the forum's answers to your specific query.

#1 Could you post your Model number and Android version...

To locate these, go to...

Settings > More > About device > Model number and Android version

This will give you the model of Samsung Galaxy S4 that you have and which Android version you are on.

#2. Your current Firmware, (not just Baseband), version .

To locate your current firmware version, go to the stock, Samsung, dial pad and type in...

*#1234#

This will give you your, "Version", details in full, usually 3 lines of information, AP: CP: CSC:, which may all be relevant.

*** If code *#1234# has been disabled on your firmware, you can download and install, free from the Play Store, Phone Info and it will give you, under Firmware Info... PDA, Baseband, CSC, versions.

#3. Also helpful would be your carrier, (service provider), location, (UK, India, Russia, USA, etc: ), and if your phone is rooted or not and running a custom ROM, (give details).

Thanks. The above helps us to help you and hopefully someone will be able to reply to you shortly. :)

For more information, see, 28 Galaxy S4 models - know yours?

(Tip: You can go to the green bar at the top of this forum and click on, "User CP", which will take you to your User Control Panel and then select, "Edit your details", under the heading, "Your profile", on the left hand side. Here you can fill in your model and firmware under, "Current devices", in, "Additional Information". This ensures that your device details are shown under your user name on the left, in every post you make. You can update this as often as you like and will help other users immediately identify your current phone and firmware details.)

Thank you ironass.

AP : I9505XXUAME2
CP : I9505XXUAMDC
CSC : I9505H3GAMD8

Those are the details that came up when I put *#1234# into my dialpad.

I hope this helps.

Thanks. Your current firmware, I9505XXUAME2, is, as you stated, for the Three network, UK, and is 3 releases out of date. This could be for a number of reasons, as stated in #1.4 of 28 Galaxy S4 models - know yours? It could also be due to the unlock process that was used.

You can download the latest version of KitKat firmware for the Three network...

Model: GT-I9505
Model name: GALAXY S4 LTE
Country: United Kingdom (H3G)
Version: Android 4.4.2
Changelist: 481100

Product Code: H3G
PDA: I9505XXUFNC5

MODEM: I9505XXUFNC5

... and flash it via Odin by following the instructions and video contained in #1.5 of 28 Galaxy S4 models - know yours?

If you are not worried about your warranty, you could, instead, flash the latest generic, unbranded, firmware for Germany which has an English language pack...

Model: GT-I9505
Model name: GALAXY S4 LTE
Country: Germany
Version: Android 4.4.2
Changelist: N/A

Be warned that doing either of the above could, as BRAINZ2013 states, re-lock your phone again and you will need to unlock it once more.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums rohitramana! :)

Your firmware details as per my post, #3, would give me a head start. ;)

Alternatively, once you have found your firmware version details, you can look it up and download it from SamMobile as per the instructions in the link in post #5, above.

Thank you for replying this soon

Well, irrespective of where you purchased the phone, according to your screenshot, it is running the old Android 4.3 firmware for the United Kingdom, CSC code BTU. The latest release for the United Kingdom, BTU, is Android 4.4.2 on release NG8...

Country: United Kingdom

Version: Android 4.4.2

As for possible reasons it may not have received an update, see #1.4 of 29 Galaxy S4 models - know yours?

Yes, it is possible to update OTA via Wi-Fi.

I am guessing that the S4 that you bought in Mongolia has been flashed with a different firmware, (BTU=UK), than that which it originally came with and therefore as the CSC and Product codes do not correspond to the original ones, it is not possible to update via OTA or Kies. The country you are in is not a problem for instance, if I had an update for my UK phone and I was in Antarctica, I would still get the update.

Yes

Whick rom would you want me to flash??? I need my phone to work like a normal samsung phone..

Whichever firmware came with the phone originally. Since I have no idea which of the 300 worldwide firmwares that may have been, I cannot suggest anything other than taking the phone to a Samsung Service Point and try asking them.

So there is no way i can do by myself??? Cause service centers here are not that good.... I. Will try asking one.... Anyway..thank you for helping me out...you have been great...i searched the internet for solution for so long... Thought i had a problem with my phone..thank you.

Probably the phone is not capable enough of running a version higher that you already got.
If you disagree, download an app called: Go Next Upgrade. (Note that this app does NOT upgrade your phone, it checks if you have the minimum requirements to run it.) Thank you.

The phone is more than capable of running more than Android 4.3, as I have shown in post #9, there is already an update to 4.4.2 for it. In fact, the S4 will be getting Android 5, Lollipop, in the near future.

Now I know a way to update the phone!
It's called Forcing OTA updates.
