Hi, I'm new to Android phones, so please forgive me if I'm asking an outrageously stupid question.

I am in the market for a new smartphone, I currently use the iPhone 3GS. I'm really interested in getting this Galaxy S2.

I read that it is using Android 2.3 which is a small upgrade from 2.2. OS is not a real big deal to me, but I'm curious. I read Honeycomb 3.0 will be delivered with it's Galaxy Tab 2. Is there any reason Galaxy S2 will not come in 3.0? Will Galaxy S2 users be able to upgrade to 3.0 in the future, or it's due to hardware reasons?

Thanks in advance.

Android 3.0 is designed for tablets as far as I know, so I'm not sure how well it will work or smaller low resoluton screens without changes to the interface, also it's not open source yet so OEM's can't customize it.

The Galaxy S2 is more than capable is running it though.

Honeycomb is designed for tablets, it would probably work well on phones as well, but they aren't releasing the source code yet cause they say it's not ready for the open market. I am sure it will come on phones eventually. Reading more up on it, it seems like it was more designed with tablets in mind, not really just for tablets. I don't know, but either way they aren't releasing the code yet.

I don't think 3.0 honeycomb will come into phones though it might be technically possible. Last I heard, 2.4 will be also called gingerbread with support for dual core apps to run on single core phones. But dual core phones will benefit from it in several ways.

Google said that next major version will be Ice Cream which combines features of both honeycomb and gingerbread. Ice Cream will run on both phone and tablet. We don't even know what version number it's going to carry. Some folks speculate 2.4 will be Ice Cream, but I don't think so. So the question is how soon SGS2 will be updated to 2.4 after release. Ice Cream is probably even further down the road.

I thought 2.4 was to be Ice Cream and Android something would be where the 2 converge, Android 3.1 if it's about making mobiles like honeycomb or 4.0 if it's a significant update for both presumably. J for ... Jelly?

It's silly having them split like this. It's not a stupid question, it's a stupid situation.
