Ok so mom is due for for an upgrade. We went to verizion to get me some screen protectors and so I was telling the rep about my friend getting the Iphone 4 from ATT. The rep has the new Iphone but told mom to go with an android 4G Lite like I have because it's 10 x faster then the iphone 4. The iphone is an 8G phone with no SD slot and the android has an SD slot. The softwere cant be updating wheres android can. so mom is going to get the droid razor m later on. The apps are free on droids where apps arent so free on the iphone.

While not wrong, the Verizon rep perhaps mistakenly said a few things:

Software updates:
Android version updates are up to Verizon. They will update your mother's new phone to the next version of Android when they feel like it. Which may never happen. This is true unless you want to root the phone yourself and install a custom ROM to any version of Android you desire. If that all sounds foreign to you, you probably shouldn't try it on your own without reading up on it first.

Apps:
They are not ALL free. Many apps that cost on apple do end up being free on Android. But not ALL.

Generically speaking, Android is a better choice than apple phones. But the rep should have spoken in detail to your mother about how she will use the phone. Does she use apple products in the rest of her life (i.e. laptop, music player, etc.)? Does memory even matter to her? Will speed of downloads matter to her (i.e. does she work at home where she will always be on wifi)?

I am a huge Android fan and recommend it every chance I get. But I have recommended apple products to people in the past based on their personal needs, usage and comfort levels. Phones are very personal things and one phone recommendation does not fit all.

One bad thing about the reps are that they work off commission so the commission he/she makes off of the android may be higher than the older Iphone.

It's all about the spiffs baby!

(The again you could make more via multiple references and repeat business if you are regarded as a sales person who listens to a customer's needs and does what is best for them. Just sayin'.)

Your mom made a good choice. :) I prefer Android for it's vast customization, usability, variety of devices, and the amount of Android phones you can get on many carriers big and small. If anything it was a wise choice to go with the Android than the iPhone in my opinion. :)
