In order to copy some apks, I have tried using Solid Explorer and File Manager to browse this folder. Solid Explorer gives me an error and File Manager tells me the folder is empty. The only way I can get in to this folder is by hooking the phone up to my pc. What gives?

Android encrypts the files while in use.

What's the point of that? I know that they're doing it for safety reasons, but in all honesty, if some random person plugs a usb cable into my phone so they can browse the contents of it, I'm gonna have some questions for them. Wouldn't it slow it down, having to run encryption on it?

That depends on how it is being encrypted. Personally I use truecrypt and encrypt, well, all of my removable media except my phone. With treucrypt, at least, there is no slowdown or reduction of file transfer speed or performance of the removable media. With an android phone, who knows. Something to look into. But, considering that it is an extra thing the phone has to do/run constantly, I'd say it more than likely slows it down, and could probably be eliminated safely.
