Help Annoying repeat notification

barry1873

Lurker
I've got a really annoying problem with SMS/MMS on my Nexus 4 (running 4.4.2) that has only just started.

Everytime I receive and SMS I get a normal notification. But when I clear the notification (either through the notification bar or app) I immediately get a new notification popping up saying I have an MMS from a contact (always the same one). This notification has nothing in it and only gives me the option to call or reply.

It also happens once I've send an SMS, it pops up too.

It's really annoying. I've even tried deleting the whole thread of messages from that contact but it still happens.

Anyone had anything similar? Any ideas how to fix?

Thanks!!!!

Hi barry1873; welcome to the board :)

What application are you using for messaging? It almost sounds like two applications are attempting to handle incoming messages, and they're each notifying once.

Thanks for the welcome! :)

I'm using the standard messaging app. I have tried Hangouts as well but it makes not difference. I don't have any other messaging apps on my phone.

I don't think it's two apps trying to notify as the notification is always the same. It doesn't matter who my message is from I still get a notification from this repeat notification always from the same contact.

What do you have set as the Default SMS App under Settings > Wireless & Networks > More... > Default SMS App?

My next suggestion was going to be disabling notifications in whichever app isn't selected as the default, just to be sure.

Okay, starting to grasp at straws now :p

When the second notification comes in (the MMS notification with the option to Call/Reply), long-press on the notification and select App Info. What application does it take you to?

Ok, getting somewhere now. When i click on app info it goes to glowfly which I use for popup notifications. if i disable that it goes away. Should probably have thought of that before now

But I quite like using it:) When I enable it again, as soon as I press that button the notification pops straight up. So seems to suggest it's definitely this app that's causing it. I've tried clearing the data cache, uninstall/reinstall but as soon as I start it up again I get the same notification.

I noticed a bit in the Play Store description for Glowfly that may be relevant:

**NOTE** - You will need to disable the system sms notifications in order to not receive multiple alerts. Android 4.4 (KitKat) does not allow apps such as Glowfly to mark messages as read.

Sounds like exactly your issue ;)

You can go into Hangouts -> Menu -> Settings -> SMS and disable Notifications for just the SMS/MMS messages (since those are handled by Glowfly) while leaving the typical chat notifications intact.

I appreciate your ongoing help but it's still not sorted! I had already disabled the hangouts notification as stated but hasn't fixed it.

Once i'd seen it was glowfly that was causing the issue I did a few web searches and found something that had a similar issue. It suggested I back up all sms, delete everything then restore. This seemed to have worked but no the same message is popping up again!

So annoying!

Have you reported the problem to Glowfly..?? Seems to me unless you really need it, uninstall Glowfly & wait till new version comes out to see if it's fixed.
