Another alternative to ATK?

So I am reading that Advanced Task Killer is no longer the hotness when it comes to shutting down bloatware running in the background. I noticed a Task Manager that comes with stock 2.2, but that looks useless. What other options are out there?

The option I like to use is the "running services" feature in application manager. Click the service you don't want running and it will stop, with a confirmation prompt.

Generally 2.2 has much better memory management so you don't even need a task killer (and probably didn't really with 2.1). Adding a task killer to Froyo is not going to help your battery.

can you essentially do the same thing on task manager? does one really need something like task killer to kill apps and such?

Yea, I noticed the Task Manager and Running Services option. I just liked the option with ATK to be able to check off all unwanted apps and do a one touch kill. With Running Svcs it seems like you have to go through each and hand pick the ones to kill.....and like Windows how do I know which ones to keep and kill?

Like right now I have:

CalendrService
SnSService (????)
WISPService
Maps Network Location service
DownloadManager2

Kind of a pain if you ask me. I guess if the phone is running smooth I can just let it be.

Three options not discussed here so far, but ad nauseum in other posts:
1. Delete the bloat.
2. Freeze the bloat/processes.
3. Rename the bloat.

All require root - this can be a big deal for some people, but so far I've never had a problem using the OneClick methods available.

Option 1 frees up space for more apps, but can be a problem if you delete something and find out later you shouldn't have. Then you're scrambling for someone to send you the app, or factory resetting the thing (if you haven't paid for a backup app).

Option 2 and Option 3 don't free up any space on your phone, but allow you to unfreeze/re-rename bloat/processes if you find out later (like I did) that some app no longer works correctly and you get force closes on Messaging (never figured that one out either. I just unfroze everything and started over.)

Option 3 requires Android SDK, a laptop, and a few commands. I did this when I had 2.1 and it was pretty straight forward, but when I got 2.2 and it wiped all that out I just paid $0.99 for a bloat freezer.

Android is not like Windows, so a Windows Ctrl-Alt-Delete mindset is not going to work here. Services will start and close on their own - it's best to just leave them be unless they're out of control. An app like the one I suggested will let you know that and give you the option to kill them if necessary.
