Another Email Question

This really isn't too much of a big deal I'm just wondering why it acts this way.
When I read an email from my computer it doesn't become read on my INC and vice versa. Is this a norm for most smartphones?

I'm using hotmail if it matters

If you are connecting via POP, it simply downloads the emails... if you read it, the email server never gets informed.

If you use IMAP, it will inform the server that the email has been read..
