Root Another FNG here. Already Rooted but tried ROM'ing :(

Hey folks,
I'll just get down to it. I had my EVO 4G rooted for about 6 months now via the instructions on the Root for Dummies Guide (Revolution, H-Boot, etc). I saw there was an update on for my phone but I knew I had to wait. I saw a thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412005.....) and decided to go with it. For some reason the word BAREBONES didn't really mean much to me (thought it was just a name) but I realized it after I flashed it. I have no real issues with the ROM (other than Swype not working anymore) but I wish it had a couple of more things (Voicemail and GTalk). I was wondering if I there was a way to add these two and Swype. I've tried deleting swipe so I can reinstall it via TB, but it freezes.

Steps I took (I realized they weren't perfect, after the fact):
1. Dl'd ROM zip and saved in phone
2. Backup via Titanium Backup
3. Installed ROM Manager
a. Installed Clockwork Recovery
4. Used ROM Manager to Install ROM from SD Card
5. Used TB to Restore Missing Apps + All System Data
- Saw that Swype wasn't working (would FC even if I wasn't "typing")
6. Rebooted into Recovery via ROM Manager
a. Fixed Permissions

Still could not get Swype.
After reading through several posts I saw that I didn't create a nandroid backup, nor did I wipe anything.
I was thinking that I try another ROM which may have GTalk and VM, and not mess with Swype. But I can't nandroid now bcuz it's different than before I used the ROM, no Swype... But then again, I don't really know much about this.

There is no problem with the ROM itself but I'm missing GTalk which I regularly use and Swype, those are my 2 main concerns. I can do wo the VM I suppose.
I'm unsure what the best course of action would be. Any help would be greatly appreaciated.
Thanks in advance.

Is G-talk available in the market? If not just download the STOCK ROM and take the APK out of it and place it on your SD card and install via a file management app.

As for swype, either do the same thing or download the swype betas from the interwebs.

Also, dont use clockwork mod or ROM manager. They cause more problems than they are worth.

VVM is probably the easiest - you just need to install the APK for that. Talk and Swype are a bit more tricky, because the require lib files that need to be copied to the /system/lib folder. That's why nothing you're doing is getting it working. I think there's a flashable version of the Talk with working video chat in the 3D forum over at XDA, so that should work for that. And maybe someone can post that lib for Swype for you (I don't have access to that ROM right now). I can do it tomorrow, if no one else has. I can get all the files you need, tomorrow.

Definitely switch to Amon Ra and always do a nandroid backup. I had the same issue with swype, just uninstall and reinstall, not restore. As for gtalk, you can flash a ROM with it, backup the app then go back to the ROM you're trying to use right now. When you backed up all of your apps TB probably didn't automatically backup gtalk because the ROM you were using probably showed it as a system app and not a downloaded app. I highly recommend using ROM toolbox for backing up apps. It let's you manage apps and backups much better.

Thanks for your reply. So I'll make the switch to Amon Ra and always remind myself to do a nandroid backup. In regards to Swype though, I can't seem to delete it through TB, it freezes up after I try to delete it. I was trying to uninstall so I could reinstall.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Here's what I've got out of it thus far and will put into practice:
1. No clockwork or ROM Manager
2. Dl a Stock ROM to get VVM and GTalk apk
3a. If installing the apk for GTalk doesn't work then get the lib files that need to be copied to /system/lib folder
3b. Search for the flashable version of GTalk
4. For Swype use 3a or 3b.

Correct?
Thanks for the help guys.

Yes. If you have trouble getting what you need, let me know. I can probably put together some flashables for you, if necessary.

I think Talk needs to be under /system/app to work properly, and don't forget to set permissions to rw-r--r-- for anything you put under /system.

EDIT: I cannot get Talk to work on that ROM for the life of me! I tried the version with Video from the Design 4G and the stock version, and both of them Force Close. The closest I came was the video version actually tried to log in, but as soon as I was connected to 3G, it crashed. The other two though, are easy, and have been no problem. All you need is the APK for VVM, and for Swype, you need to install the APK, and put the lib under /system/lib like I said earlier. But Talk, I'm not sure what was stripped out of this barebones ROM, but apparently it was one too many things :O. I'm still working on it, but I'm about to give up pretty soon.

EDIT 2: I am completely stumped on why Talk won't work. I tried it on both the odexed & deodexed versions with no success. logcats gave me no useful information. I'm sorry to say that if you want to use it, you may have to use a less stripped ROM. Sorry :(.

EDIT 3: Well, I got it working! It was tough, though. Turns out the issue is that I signed the file (wrong, somehow). But which one you need will be dependent on whether you flashed the deodexed version or the odexed. Actually, you know what? The deodexed one will work on both. But now I've got my sights set on getting the Video version working. Stay tuned . . .

EDIT 4: It is done! I got the Video GTalk working (Video only works on Wi-Fi, though) and Swype and VVM all working successfully on the odexed version of Barebones. They'll work fine on the deodexed version as well, of course. I'll upload the files to my 4shared and link them back here for you.

EDIT 5 (FINALLY!): Add Swype lib & Install Talk (recovery-flashable zip); vtt-sprint.apk; Swype.apk
