Root Another JB Update?!

my reverb is trying to update from md6 to md12...who knows about this?

I haven't seen it yet. It would be great if you can download and share the ota file. It will ask you if you want to install it after downloading. You can wait for installing later. After you download, the ota file should be in /cache.

Edit: OK. I got it. It is 46.3 MB fairly large update. Boot, recovery, system everything is updated. I have cleared the data of Google services and rebooted to force the update.

Here is the download link for update zip.

How do I flash this? Tried with CWM, didn't work obviously, so then tried to reflash stock recovery, but that didnt want to flash with Odin. So I'm stuck with CWM for now and no update.

I have just flashed it

MD6 stock ROM and stock boot images are required. Also there should be nothing deleted or modified in the /system directory (having superuser.apk, su binary, and busybox are okay). So you will need to restore /system if you have modified anything. If you are not able to restore your modifications in /system than KIES restore is the only way I can imagine.

Here is the procedure:
- copy the update zip in the previous message to /cache if your phone hasn't downloaded it yet.
- I have built the following flashable zip that will restore original boot image. Go to CWM and flash this. MD6 stock boot image
- reboot into stock recovery or CWM recovery
- flash the update zip
- reboot into MI2

Everything will be restored but apps, data, and settings will be preserved.

I will be working on the recovery and kernel for rooting this again. I will let you know soon

Edit: stock recovery was not really require based on the sanjuro's feedback below. So this post has been updated accordingly.

Rooting also works with ODIN using the already existing 6.0.3.6 touch recovery. So we are all set for rooting.

Next is the kernel. Samsung has already posted MI2 source and I have downloaded it. Let me check what has changed. I will update the kernel source to MI2 and rebuild.

Edit: I had to root again since I had reverted to stock recovery before the update. Sanjuro showed that restoring the stock recovery was not necessary. CWM can flash the update.

Can't get the stock recovery to boot. Just a flash of blue screen and then nothing, then phone reboots.
I am however able to use Odin to get CWM reflashed, so I'm right back where I started.

I didn't have that problem. Do you have a Reverb with OOTB JB?

I have included the stock recovery from the older Reverb in the zip file. We might need the stock recovery from a Reverb with OOTB JB.

Nope, mine came with ICS originally. But I did use Kies not that long ago to factory reset it.
Anyway, gonna try to download it again, maybe the file got corrupted.

I have checked the kernel updates in MI2. Other than included exfat driver source, the kernels are exactly the same. I have directly flashed the existing MiRaGe kernel and it is working fine. I think exfat driver is not a big deal. So I will not update the kernel. We are all set with MiRaGe kernel for MI2 ROM.

I had the same issue after flashing returnsstockreverb. However, notification says system update is available, so I chose that route instead of flashing mrg666's zip. That worked. And then, tried Odin and it says Pass, but I can't reboot into stock recovery. The phone works just fine though.

Cool I'll give that a shot

Edit- that's working so far. Funny, the update thinks my phone is a Galaxy Rush!

Hmm...didn't work. Phone won't boot now (soft). Gonna try some other stuff. Yay adventure!

Since CWM can't flash the OTA update (I have tried), you had a working stock recovery after flashing my zip. I was able to boot into stock recovery and there were no problems. I have no idea what could be the problem in your case  I will let you know if something comes up.

Edit: CWM couldn't flash in my case since the boot image was not stock. Otherwise sanjuto showed that CWM flashed the update.

So the strangest thing happened...

After what I thought was a soft brick happened, I flashed your CWM with Odin. Upon reboot, CWM opened up and installed the ota update ALL BY ITSELF, in the same way that the stock recovery would have.
Then gave me the option to disable reflash of stock recovery, and then option to fix root.

So now my phone again rebooted, and is now finishing its upgrade.

Best I can figure is that after I tried to install the update, the boot locked up while it was looking for the recovery, but there was no recovery. So it wouldn't boot until after I reflashed CWM. Still not sure how cwm was able to flash an OTA update though.

So anyway, I'm all good. Update confirmed.
Also didn't lose my custom boot animation or startup/shutdown sounds! Bonus!

Done!

I was using a wrong zip to flash w/Odin as there are so many zip files on my PC. :D My mistake. :o :p

All good now. :)

When I tried installing the OTA update without restoring anything, CWM started installing the update and failed after that. And I have restored both recovery and boot image after that. Based on your feedback, restoring only the boot image would have been sufficient. Okay then, I am updating my post above and I will replace the zip file with another that will restore the stock boot image only. That should be better.

I can give that one a shot, too, when my gf gets home. She's got a Reverb, too.

can anyone spot the differences between md6 and MI12? is it worth flashing the stock boot image and updating? any performance improvements?

Just curious, Sanj...when you initially flashed mrg's recovery; did you do it by CWM (you had 6.0.2.3. then, right?), or Odin?
Is there possibly some "binary" difference between the installation methods of CWMT6.0.3.6 that this particular update preferred?
Only reason I ask this, is because if possible, I want to try and avoid using the PC as a go between for my 'phone-ware' installs...so I'd be letting the OTA do it's thing, like yours did.

Nothing against Odin; that in and of itself works fine.
But that also means that I gotta pull the update file with the PC to get it to Odin in the first place.

And quite honestly, my experiences with downloading roms with our Acer netbook (yes, I said it: netbook) and then trying to move the downloaded files to my phone has been...let's just say 'less than stellar'; Got Windows 8 as an OS for it, too...:motz:...nuff said!

Sorry if this is a dumb question: In the step where you say "flash the update zip," I'm unclear how to do this after copying the update zip to /cache. In CWM recovery (I'm using 6.0.2.3), I don't see a way to flash a zip from /cache. Am I missing something obvious?

I used Odin the first time I installed 6.0.3.6 only because I had just done a Kies reset a few days ago but otherwise I would have just used cwm test 8. I did have to use Odin this time also but only because the stock recovery I tried to use didn't work.
