Help Another Jelly Bean Issue

P4ula

Newbie
I've seen a few Jelly Bean issue threads but didn't want to hijack someone else's thread.

Firstly I want to thank those that created that masterpiece that is the Rooting for Dummies, despite my lack of tech ability I managed to root and install a new ROM, with no issues. After spending a total of 7 hours reading thread after thread, rooting took 2 minutes, if that!

Sorry for the long post that follows but I’m hoping someone can help with the problem I have.

I have had my SG2 for 2 years and prior to updating from ICS to JB a couple of weeks ago, did not have a single issue with it.

However, since doing the upgrade, I have had issues with force closing and apparent lack of charge in the battery.

A friend suggested factory resetting it. I did this and despite clearing my phone of everything (after syncing to Google which didn't work!) and then resetting it, I still had issues with the FC & battery.

So after factory resetting it again and then rooting it, I had hoped that my problem would be solved. So today after installing cyanogenmod and being amazed at how fancy it was, I thought that I would be safe to start setting my phone back up – I wish!

The first thing I did was to set up my emails, so after syncing my gmail and 1 hotmail account, I was happy to see that it had not switched off. However, when I started to sync my 2nd Hotmail account, it switched itself off, and when I tried to switch it back on, the battery was showing empty, despite being at 76% when I was syncing. I reconnected to the USB and the battery flashed from empty to 2/3rds full and allowed me to switch it back on. It is now happily charging, showing 72%.

I have removed everything off my SD card so basically it was like a new phone out of the box, apart from the Rooting, of course. I have also done the battery reset that is also recommended on here.

I think I have tried everything suggested on here but hopefully someone can anyone shed some light on my problem? I’ve ordered a new battery but can’t understand how this would be the problem as it was fine before the OTA update to JB.

My stats before the Root where as follows:

PDA: I9100XWLSS

Hello and welcome to Android Forums P4ula! :)

Lets see if we can sort you out...

However, since doing the upgrade, I have had issues with force closing and apparent lack of charge in the battery.

Was the update done via Kies or OTA, (Over The Air)?

A friend suggested factory resetting it. I did this and despite clearing my phone of everything (after syncing to Google which didn't work!) and then resetting it, I still had issues with the FC & battery.

Did you also Format your internal and external storage at the same time as per the Firmware update problems... what you can do!?

Thanks for replying ironass, had a long day at work today but lets see if I can answer your questions.

1. The JB update was done OTA.

2. After doing the factory resets, I also formatted both the internal and external storage.

3. I installed Cyan 10.1, thanks I'll have a read of the link.

4. I'll have a look at the other ROMs.

Just to update, after having a couple of uneventful hours post installation of the gapps, I thought that my problem was solved. Unfortunately mid download of an app off playstore it switched off again.:(

3. I installed Cyan 10.1, thanks I'll have a read of the link.

As per my earlier link, CM10.1 is probably one of the worst custom ROM's to install as there hasn't been a stable release in 5 months. Not a ROM that I would recommend for every day, stable, use I'm afraid.

Thanks Ironass, just reading the Neat ROM stuff.

I take it I can just install over Cyan?

Sorry nevermind, I'll read the other threads first.

My Baseband version ends with XXMS2, I can only see XXMS1 on the XDA instructions, is this the one I would use.

Full wipe is best if coming from an AOKP ROM like CM10.1

Go for the very latest version, XWLSS. Either FULL or LITE. LITE has a lot of bloatware removed, as per post #1, here.

Thanks ironass for the help I have just successfully installed the Neat ROM Lite.

However I was a little surprised at how visually similar it is to the original JB.

I have installed XWLSN NeatROM Lite v4.6, as I couldn't see the XWLSS one, you recommended above.

Since installing Cyan the other night and this afternoon, I have had the phone force close at least 3 times a day. Fingers crossed this change helps.

Thanks again for the advice.

It is basically a stock ROM with all the bloatware removed and a little extra, "sauce", as Slug, the Mod, would say.

First post, here, under the heading... "LITE VERSION". Don't worry, I'm expecting XWLSW Lite version to be out soon.

CM10.1 is not to be recommended for stable, daily, use yet I'm afraid.

NEAT ROM is the popular one for the flashers on All Things Root. ;)

OK since installing NeatROM last, I have had no issue with my phone force closing. So very happy at the moment. :-)

Well I've had another force close, late last night, nothing so far today. Picking my new battery up on Monday, so fingers crossed that works.

Now that you are rooted, try wiping cache partition, dalvik and fixing permissions in Recovery. See post #2 of the Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide in the All Things Root section of the forum. Failing that, post your query in the NEAT ROM thread on there as the developer, salesale, is very helpful.

I haven't logged on for a while so thanks Ironass for this last bit of advice. Just a quick update.

I have been using my new battery (one of those extended ones), and things have improved although I am still getting the occasional freeze, where I had to shut off and restart. The battery life was really good, so was happy with that, but couldn't find a case to fit the much thicker phone.

I have today put in a 'normal' battery, fully charged it by 11am this morning and now at just before 5pm, it has already used 45%! I have played a couple of games of Candy Crush (please don't slate me!) and maybe 15 minutes on the t'interweb and it has been linked to wifi permanently.

Any one have any ideas what could be causing this rapid usage?

Hi P4ula!

I am still getting the occasional freeze, where I had to shut off and restart.

As you are rooted, you could install, IMHO, the best kernel that there is for the SGSII... Siyah. This kernel is completely configurable and maybe you should try the Performance setting to see if that solves your freezing problem. For more details, instructions and settings, see posts #1 and #2 of the Siyah kernel - Dummies Guide.

Probably you P4ula.

In the normal course of events, the screen is the biggest consumer of power. Add to that gaming or browsing and I would expect a battery drop of around 10-15% per hour. Lets be fair, a laptop computer would only last about 5 hours under such circumstances.

The Battery Saving - Dummies Guide contains loads of useful tips and information on extending battery life... particularly on rooted phones.

Post #17 of the guide also explains about a very useful app for tracking down exactly what is using your battery... BetterBatteryStats.
