Help Another Newbie Question

new to android and the s3 and verizon.

I've found that texts sent to me don't result in a tone. I've got the "notifications" item set to sound and vibrate. It does show messages on the menu bar but no sound and no vibration.

For that masses I set the setting to have keyboard presses make a sound and I hear nothing. No sound when I get an email. The general setting app is set to sound and vibrate

What am I doing wrong?

Do you have your volume on LOUD? I know you've gone to the system settings to turn them up, but sometimes, and I do this way too often, I turn my sound down with the volume control on the side.
