Help Another non-rooted Desire stuck in boot loop

Hi,

This is very similar to previous posts, but I want to ask a slightly different question. I've resigned myself to sending the phone for repair (it's in warranty) but I desperately want to back up my data first.

I haven't rooted it or anything like that (goody two-shoes). It's less than 2 years old and the naughtiest thing I've done is install Advanced Task Killer. Now I'm in a boot loop. It had been reporting lack of phone space for ages but I'd moved as much as possible to the SD card. However, I still had some contacts on the phone and would like to keep my messages.

I can get to the Bootloader menu (vol down + power) to click Recovery and get the red triangle/exclamation, from where I can get to the Recovery menu (vol up + power). It says:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't mount DATA:data/recovery/log

but I get four options (Reboot, Apply sdcard:update.zip, Wipe data, Wipe cache partition). I've tried the latter and it didn't help.

I have installed ADB on my PC, but my Desire is only recognised when I get to the red triangle and the recovery pages, at which point "adb devices" returns:

List of devices attached
HT11FPL00508 offline

As I understand it this means none of the ADB commands will work.

Is there anything I can do to get the phone into online mode so that ADB will work? Are there any other options?

Many thanks.

Try adb from recovery (red triangles). Certainly some commands will work.

Did you let the phone sync contacts with Google? If so they are backed-up. If unsure, sign in to GMail via a browser, click on the red word GMail and select Contacts. Are your contacts shown there?

If you can get "adb pull" to work, I believe the files you are after are:

/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db

And

/data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db

If adb won't pull them when in recovery then it's find a way of booting the phone without wiping data or you are stuck. If the reboot is an overheating bug you might manage that, otherwise not much hope.

Hmm, less optimistic after trying it myself.

I could do it, but I have a custom recovery (rooted) and could mount /data when in recovery. Without that it didn't work. So you can try, but having only the very limited stock recovery I'm not hopeful.

Hello, i would like to find out if the original poster found any workaround to the problem (in case he/she is still around the forums of course...)

I have the exact same problem. Unrooted phone, tried all the procedure with adb, stuck with device offline, and i was wandering if there 's anything else i could do, before saying goodbye to my data and contacts...FYI the phone is off warranty.

Thanks for any replies.
