another plastic screen

stratct

Newbie
hi all, i just bought a samsung galaxy ring (virgin mobile) i didnt know too much about it but i was in need of a new phone as my kyocera event (junk) got stuck in boot loop and then bricked. i didnt even root it lol. well i was expecting this to be 4.0.... it ended up being 4.1.2! but upon getting home i noticed the screen feels like plastic. i was wondering about plastic screens. i understand high end phones usually have gorilla glass and since this phone isn't high end i can understand why it isn't. im guessing this is a way for Samsung to bring us an affordable s3 looking 4.1.2 touchwiz phone. or is there another reason the screen is plastic? i know Samsung is more known for their software and theirs hardware is nothing to write home about, however, my dad has a galaxy reverb which is the older model of the ring pretty much and his is gorilla glass. or is mine glass and i just think its plastic? im so confused. oh well. i guess ill put a screen protector on it and have the best of both worlds.

I'll bet it's to keep price down.
Weird thing is, my cheapo huawei ascend y never got a single scratch on it and I owned it a little over 6 months.
My current phone, a Galaxy Proclaim, has hairline scratches all over its screen and I'm very gentle with my phones. Only owned for 3 months. And this phone was about $70 more expensive than the huawei. Go figure.

Considering how light my phone is and how easy it scratches, I'd say mine is plastic (and my huawei felt heavier). That's probably the only way you're gonna guesstimate, unless a Google search might bring something up for you.

Haha yeah. I did a long Google search. But the phone is so new it doesn't have any info on that aspect

aw too bad. Well, a screen protector like you said would definitely be a good option.
Me? I'll deal without one, I'd prefer some light scratches over annoying bubbles all over my screen any day, lol!

Another $50 would have put you into a Nexus 4 with Gorilla Glass and much better specs, but would have required a change in provider(It's a GSM only phone, VM is CDMA).

Your phone has a TFT LCD display with no Gorrila glass protection, better have a screen-guard on it..

Congrats for a new phone, but Nexus 4 is worth next 50 bucks and carrier switch; and at&t is not bod at all..

Yup, for example, Straight Talk has unlimited talk, text and browsing for $45. And AT&T's HSPA+ on the N4 would be preferable to EV-DO on Sprint's Virgin Mobile.

It's definitely plastic / lexan / whatever they use lol. Is there a way that I can avoid scratches without using a screen protector? I like my phones naked lol

Well gorilla glass is anyway only scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof. And the ordinary glass on my last phone lasted 3 years with just one scratch (and you needed to know where to look to see that one), with no screen protector at all.

To avoid scratches without a screen protector, I'd suggest you never put the phone in the same pocket as any hard object, and avoid putting it face-down on any surfaces. If you aren't going to use a screen protector or a flip case there's nothing more you can do than be careful like that.

I can just tell that it's plastic. I know the difference between glass and plastic

I don't think it is. According to the product manual there is a warning about too much pressure on the tempered glass surface can crack it. I also don't think it would be possible to make a capacitive touch screen out of acrylic. The static generated from pulling it in and out of your pocket or rubbing a finger over it would wreak havoc on the digitizer.

Plain tempered glass can have a very "plasticy" feel to it and scratch rather easily.

Could be you have plastic fingernails. ;)

I have no idea about the phone in question, but the screen on my old Huawei Ascend was definitely plastic.

Could be as I have never actually seen one, but all the replacement screen sites for both the Ascend and the Ascend II say glass.
