Another root thing with a twist

I rooted my Captivate a while back without a problem. I rooted my S 2 a few months ago without a problem that has/had Gingerbread on it. I read through the forums after upgrading to ICS and the information on rooting is scattered all over the place. XDA is a whole mess in itself if you aren't a developer.

I used Odin and the I-777 GalaxyS2ATTRootZedomax root process the first time around...no problem. It has failed more than once with ICS. I haven't seen or just otherwise skipped right past whether it's supposed to work with ICS and an S2, I-777.

Odin said the update passed, although it never came up. I've spend several hours trying to get it straightened out and after trying to reload another kernel it's crap.

So one phone is completely forked now and just powers on, shows the boot logo and goes out. The newer phone, also I-777 with Gingerbread now, had the same process fail. I am thinking the CWM kernel is the culprit. A few times when trying to figure it out, I had the default odin screen come up and not the CWM recovery screen. I figure it just outright failed.

So while I'm babbling, I backed up a few days ago with Titanium and since I don't know of a good, reliable way to root my phone I can't get some of my data from the backup.

I am going to upgrade the OS to ICS again if I can get Kies to connect any time soon. Once I do that I'll need to root again so I can restore some data.

So what will work, without a doubt? I have Superoneclick and Odin. I could probably root GB with Odin but I'd lose root after I upgraded.

Any help, please?
