Root Another Started to Root But Did Not Finish

jbcase01

Newbie
I'm new to this forum, and need some help.

I started the root process on my HTC EVO 4G last November (2011) and stopped b/c I too nervous about bricking my phone. When depressing the down + power buttons, the boot loader (think thats what you call it) comes up.

Here are the details:

-Revolutionary-
Supersonic EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF (I got that far)
HBOOT-6.16.1002
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.0808
Mar 8 2011, 17:02:15

My situation:

I'm fairly certain that I made a backup, but the SD card in the phone has crapped out, so it will no longer work in the phone. I can read put the SD card in an adapter and look access the SD card on my laptop, but am not sure which file(s) I need (the backup). I have several files that I believe (file dates are Nov '11) to be the ones I used when starting to root, as well as what I believe to be the backup files.

Here are the file names:

revolutionary-0.4pre4.zip
su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
update-cm-7.1.0-Supersonic-signed.zip
HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe

Backup Directory:

clockworkmod\backup\2011-11-12.20.58.57\

.android_secure
boot
cache
data
nandroid.md5
recovery
system

While reading the Unrevolked forum, I noticed that my radio version is not supported at this time (for reversing S-off)... not sure what to do at this point.

I'd like to figure this out and hopefully learn something new.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Greetings! And glad you found AF!
You are basically in the same boat as the other guy who rooted but not finished.
First thing I recommend is getting another sd card that will work in your phone.
Or, can you access the sd card while in the phone that is plugged into computer?
Looks at if you are totally rooted and you can flash the updated radios later, that's no problem.
I believe we need to figure out this sd card issue first.
Can you browse the sd card on the phone with a file explorer such as Astro or ES File explorer?

Nice. You got s-off while it was still available!

All you need is to change your custom recovery to amon ra and then you can make a nandroid backup( think of it as a time machine, if anything gets screwed up, poof your right back where you were when you make the backup) and you can flash to your hearts content

I agree totally, but he says his sd card will not work in his phone...that may be cause for concern?:)

Thank you for all of the replies.

After my last post, I accessed the old SD card and pulled the backup I created when I got S-OFF. The files that were included in the backup folder are:

.android_secure
boot
cache
data
nandroid.md5
recovery
system

I have a new SD card in the phone now, and am assuming that I'll need to install HTC Sync on the laptop, turn on USB debugging, then move the backup files over to the SD card on the phone... or not.

When I got S-OFF, I installed titanium backup on my phone, then followed the directions to see if I was rooted... I am not.

This is the point where I'm not sure what to do... "... change your custom recovery to amon ra and then you can make a nandroid backup"

Can you give me a little more info?

Not sure what you mean when you said "followed directions to see if you were rooted"...what directions?
Were you able to install TB? And did it ask you for superuser permissions?
Perhaps all you need is the superuser and Amon Ra recovery.

yeah sometimes, especially with tb you might get denied root access. if that happens just go into the su app and it should list the apps that has been denied. you can allow them access from their and you will be good to go. sometimes clearing out cache from tb will help out as well.

Sorry, I forgot about opening a shell...

$whoami

su: permission denied

When using TB, get the same result: Could not acquire root privileges. This application will not work, verify ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox.

Not sure where to get superuser or Amon Ra recovery.

And if it's not there go here
Click on "show" under HTCDEV method, then scroll down to step 3 "How to flash su file or flash a rom"
But right before that is the option to "How to get recovery" which should be done first if you do not have one. Amon ra that is!:D

Nice and easy to follow!

Picking up where I left off now...

Copied all data on SD card over to laptop
Wiped SD card
Copied Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed and placed on root.
Skipped steps involved with obtaining S-OFF (b/c I already had)
Flashed Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed
While still in recovery, made backup
(Tried to get ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip, but the site has been seized)
Rebooted and copied backup files over to my computer
Verified root was obtained
Downloaded Amon Ra 2.3, renamed and moved to SD card
In hboot, update = yes, reboot = no, recovery -> backup
Created nandroid backup (first three plus wimax), copied files over to computer

I'd like to use a superwipe app and get the phone as clean as I can before flashing a new ROM. What is the next best thing since this one is no longer available?

Kernels: What is best, or should I just stick with the one packaged with the rom?
ROMs: What is best?

Getting excited about having a new phone!

You really dont need that superwipe zip....It helps, yes, but if you manually wipe 3 times, you dont need it. I dont use any wipe.zip to help me wipe. I can wipe myself....ha.:)
Stick with the kernel that comes with a rom. Let it run a few days.
You can always switch kernels in about 3 minutes tops.:D

Still looking for a ROM to flash... looks like there are loads out there, but not sure which one to pick.

Would like to flash a ROM and have all the stuff still work, especially alarm clock since tomorrow is a work day!

One of the first ones I heard about (before gaining s-off) last year was cyanogenmod. I just downloaded cm-7.2.0-supersonic (stable mod), but would like a little reassurance before flashing it.

Any advice on this would again be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

I am on Decks Reloaded and it flies!
I was on MikG3.11 and it was nice also but in my opinion, I'm stayin with Decks....I hear an update is coming soon....cant wait!
See my sig for link:D

Edit: cant see my sig....look for my first post in this thread
Edit again: after 1st edit, my sig shows...hmm

If you want an AOSP rom (cm is aosp), I would suggest decks reloaded. It's the best gingerbread AOSP ROMs out there.

If you want something that looks a little closer to stock run mikg.

Whatever you do,, just make sure to nandroid!

Well, I've looked at Decks Reloaded, CM, and have been tempted by MIUI. I guess the good thing about this is that I can try them all!

Will do a nandroid before flashing. Will post again when done.

Thanks for the help and suggestions!

I so love me some miui as well. There's either ics or gb builds you can flash. The gb build works flawlessly but is hard to find nowadays. It's in my drop box if you need it hit me up :p

So, I've got the Deck's Reloaded ROM, kernal, and recovery saved and ready to go.

Still have the same hboot... not sure if I need a new one of those.
Looks like I can download the PRI 2.33_003, but not sure what to do with that, or the PRL--00002... yet.

More reading for me to do. Anything special going on with the PRI and PRL?

Just worry about the kernel for now,the rom comes with its own kernel you can change that later if you prefer.
Just read very carefully about that rom on the link you got it from.
Dont worry about the recovery/pri/prl yet.
Just flash the rom for now if you like.
You already have a recovery.
Just make sure you understand what is posted in the rom OP and you will be good to go, then flash it!:D
If you have any questions, now is the time to ask...even if you are not quite clear on some stuff....we be here!:D

Started with nandroid backups, then onto flash.

(did manual wipes before flashing, then power off and battery off for about 15 min)

Flashed the following:

Decks_Reloaded, build: Clyde_44
Kernel: 2.6.38.8-Mason-G-d15rc3-sbc (default) [atyrelyoung@dark-VBox #9]
Aroma option: MIUI

Flashed with a2sd method, 2048mb partition, upgraded ext2 to ext3

After flash, created nandrid, then ran the following in terminal emulator:

su
a2sd reinstall
a2sd cachepart

Thinking I need to move some TB backups over to the SD card to get old apps and apps history back. While in TB, I made several backups, one with downloads only, the other with downloads, and voicemail, last everything.

Only issue seems to be gps. Cannot get a lock on satellites with Gps status &toolbox.

Any ideas on how to fix if diff from moving tb files back over?

Wat about kernel, and using vipermod(?)
