Answered: How to upgrade if you are still under contract.

I added a line to our plan just last week to get my Eris. I wanted to change my phone # anyway so I left the Eris on the new line. Incidentally, I was offered an early upgrade on a smartphone for both my other lines, but since I wanted a new number, decided to do it this way.

I talked to Verizon today, and I'll be taking my Eris to a store on 4/29, and exchanging it for the Incredible. It will be within my 30 days to return, and I just have to pay the difference and the restock fee. No biggie.

My plan is to cancel my original line when I am able. Right now, I still have my MOTO Rival on it.

I wish I would have waited one more week and I would have just added the line on the 19th and preordered my Incredible and had it shipped to me so that I didn't have to mess around at the store...but patience wasn't a virtue that was ever bestowed upon me!!! :)

Only problem now is I don't want to put too much effort into "getting to know" my Eris!!

How long have you had your current contract? If over a year you can get the $199 price with a new 2yr contract. That is what I am planning on doing to get out of my crappy Saga.
I've had my contract for thirteen months. This sounds like the way to go for me. Thank you.

No, If you drop the data plan on the secondary phone you will be hit with $350 termination fee.

You want drop your current line since it only has a termination fee of $150. You will lose your current phone number though.

This is absolutely incorrect. This is something you should definitely be 100% sure about before you post.

You can move your phones around anyway you want to. You can flip an old phone to the new line and the Incredible to the number of your choice and not have any kind of penalty to do so.

I was told by Verizon that they will not do this? If they will that is awesome news?

It's do able but technically you can be charged a $20 ESN fee. Not everyone charges it but it is a legit fee. You can always move your phones yourself by signing into your VZW account and changing the ESN from within.

my NE2 is not good till 10/5/2010 what can I do :(

If your NE2 is 10/5/2010, I'd assume you're available for an annual upgrade. Sign into your account and see if that is so. Annual upgrade gets you the phone at 2 year pricing, however you waive your NE2 credit and do have a 20 dollar early upgrade fee.

Let me clear this up.

Wynnded, are you a single line or is your phone on a family share? If you're on a single line you're good. If your phone is on a family share, you would have to be the primary number to be eligible for a new 2 year contracts as secondary lines get an upgrade every 20 months.

trying to figure out the best approach to getting the incredible without paying an arm and a leg is turning out to be more complicated than brain surgery -- not that i have any idea how complicated brain surgery is. anyway, i'm hoping to get some feedback from others on here as to what my best option(s) is. thanks in advance.

i currently have two lines under a family plan. primary line is not available for NE2 until 4/30/2011 -- associated with the TP2. secondary line is not eligible for an upgrade until 7/30/2011 -- used to be ex's line, but now i just have a dummy phone associated with it.

so i'm thinking the following options are potentially available to me:

1. bite the bullet and pay full retail and swap the TP2 for the incredible on the primary line. sell either my used TP2 on e-bay/craigslist or "accidentally" break it and use my insurance on it for a "new/refurbished" one, which i'd then sell on e-bay/craigslist, hoping to get some money for it.

2. add a third family line and get the incredible at the subsidized price. this plan seems more logical (and legal?), but i don't want to pay for two data plans on two lines, especially when i'm only going to be using the one line with the incredible. i'm wondering if i'd be able to cancel one of my current lines without having to pay the $350 ETF -- maybe cancel my secondary line with the "dummy" phone, then use the "dummy" phone to replace the TP2 and drop the data plan associated with the TP2?

3. see if i can find a way to just drop the data plan associated with the TP2? -- tell them i'm willing to pay per MB usage (won't matter to me since i won't even turn it on).

i have no idea if the above-described plans even make any sense. just had surgery a few days ago and still feeling a bit woosy.

if anyone has any better plans or other suggestions, i'd really appreciate it!

I am indeed on a single line, NATIONWIDE TALK & TEXT 450 is what VZ calls it. What I find when I click "Phone Details", then "Upgrade Now", then "Continue", the site will only show me full retail prices for phones. I probably need to call Customer Service to see what they say huh....

Your second option will definitely be cheaper in the long run probably. Just get a new line with the phone at a subsidized price. Make that new line your primary number, and put a $20 pay-as-you-go dumb phone on the line you're currently using. Then you'll just have to play the waiting game until those other two lines expire, but combined they'll only be $9.99 a month plus taxes and such levied by your state.

Depending on the EFT on those lines too, it might be better than paying the 9.99 in the long run, but I that's not likely. It's worth asking while you're there though. For instance, you would have to pay $160 of the course of the life of the first line until it expires, but your EFT on that line might be less than that amount. Either way, it seems that you're better off adding a line, but not my much. With two lines you aren't using, that's a lot of $9.99 fees for the next couple of months.

Yea when I sign in it says I have to wait till 10/5/2010 contract ends 2/5/2011

thanks for the reply.

i guess the part that i'm still a bit confused even after reading all the other posts is whether i'd be charged a huge fee if i swap the TP2 for a "dummy" phone... even if i don't cancel the line. the reason i ask is cause when i got the TP2, i obviously got it at the subsidized price when i added the second line to my plan. however, considering that i haven't had the TP2 for the entire 2 years, verizon hasn't had the chance to milk 2 years cost of data plan associated with the TP2 from me yet.

wouldn't this be similar to someone getting the incredible at the subsidized price, but don't use it for a month or so (but continue to pay the data plan) and then swap the incredible for a cheap phone and subsequently sell the "unused" incredible on e-bay or craigslist for near retail? of course this example is a bit more extreme since i've had the TP2 for more than a month, but i'd think verizon would have figured out this "loophole".

damn my brain hurts.

As far as I know, you can always change your phone and change your plans with the Worry Free Guarantee, and that was echoed by the rep that I talked with yesterday. I'm sure this is because even if you switch the phone and drop the data plan, you're then not using up the data that you were so they're incurring less cost as a result. Also, if you sell any phone like that it'll have to end up back on a Verizon plan anyways because of the radio so I doubt they really care to much. They make their money on plans, not phones.

So, you should be good to go. That's what I'm planning on doing and both Verizon and Best Buy said I was good to go when I talked to them both yesterday.

Hey Smoof, it looks like you and I are in the same boat. My NE2 is in Nov. though. I think that what we're going to have to do is call and speak to a CSR.....I would right this moment, but Dr. Who is on....and I'd prefer to be a little sharper of mind when I do.

Edit: I just encountered your post in The Big Thread. It appears that we are able to get the Inc. when it is released. Thank you for taking the time to do the work on finding the answer.

Minor Update: Chatted very briefly with a CSR to double check my eligibility for an Annual Upgrade and got an affirmative. I then inquired as to how to go about it via the VZ webpage. The answer that I was given was that can only be done over the phone.

The CSR asked what phone that I might be interested in and I replied that I understand that there might be a new one in the very near future. When she didn't take the bait, I continued, as though I was only taking a long breath, and offered that it might be called the Droid Incredible. There was a suspicious pause and she said that she'd seen a little info on the web but immediately added that she had no official information. I'm boots up and out for the eve....
