Personally i use avast antivirus which does not consume too much battery life or memory.

Yes use Avast its a lot better and free !!
With out the Norton problems and size

Is an anti-virus really required?? I am new to android and what I have read on varoius forums has me confused.

If your Tab is rooted then potentially 'yes', seeing as you will have access to unsigned aps which are not on the google lpay store.

It was not that long ago that a developer on google play store had all his aps pulled due to them being infected with what was loosely termed as DroidDream virus.

50,000 people downloaded the infected aps!

Thanks for that! So my tablet should be safe as I have not rooted it and presently cannot see any real benefit for me in going that root(pun intended )
