i do agree with the scientists though. it is mother nature at its worst.
 
@LV426 ... LOL. It shows yet again that when humans try to intercede with nature, nature will reaffirm that we are just big monkeys chasing a fantasy banana. ;)

@Clementine_3 , the great blue heron is a majestic bird and they are incredible to watch as they land. But, putting out some sunflower seeds for the cardinals is not quite the same financial proposition as keeping the pond filled with koi. Too bad they don't eat snakes, we got plenty of them.

@ocnbrze I *do* have an aquarium. A 40 gallon "breeder" tank currently without fish, water or gravel. I have thought about refilling it, but I'm at a loss to where to put it in the new(ish) house. I did see a pretty cool vertical tank at the pet shop recently, but I would guess that it's a bear to clean.
 
I've been watching all these nano tank builds on YouTube. I'm thinking of doing a bowl reef tank and put it on a bookshelf or something....... might be fun to do.
 
ok just shelled out another $250 worth for corals over the internet from UniqueCorals. i bought a '10 frag coral pack'. in case you do not know, frags are where you can cut off a piece of live coral and grow them. Unfortunately some corals you can't do this; or its not very profitable to do it because some of them grow very slowly when trying to propagate them. I also had to shell out for another light fixture which set me back another $500. the corals I'm getting like very strong lighting and i want to make sure i have that for them.

yeah......i know i'm currently scratching my itch right now......I can't wait to see what they decide to send me. The frag pack is picked by team at unique corals

I haven't found a big enough rock for my turtle. He needs a bigger tank though for that rock...

I can't release TK to the wild in New England but I'd like to make him as comfortable as possible.

I'm gonna get some fish when he's gone.

I'm glad you did not release the turtle out into the wild. Its one reason why i dislike many pet stores. they keep a lot of organisms that either just do not do well in captivity or they get way too big for most people. right now certain areas of california the native species of turtles are being taken over by red eared sliders. In Huntington Beach there is a very large park with a huge pond. The city stocks it with bass and bluegills for the locals to fish. but it seems more often then not the locals are catching large aquarium fish that people have released into the pond. I'm talking about oscars, pacus, arowanas, and even large pleco's for example.

i even saw on youtube where a kid has put his outgrown fish into a pand that he did mostly by himself which is great. however, these are tropical fish. most need water temps in the 78-80's. I'm sure that some may be able to adapt to colder waters. I just saw that his redtail just died.......hmmm i wonder why?

Ohio fish rescue has a youtube channel where they rescue people's large aquarium fish and either find homes like zoos or other people with monster size tanks or they keep it for themselves.

frustration I made a DYI overflow system for my reef tank. i did not think i need to test it as i have seen many youtube videos on how to do one, and i thought i had the whole idea and concept down.......
WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!

its supposed to be designed so that if and when there is a power outage the water will not over flow my sump filter at the bottom of my tank. a siphon was never created so i can't prime the over flow box.

luckily i used some unions which allows me to unhook the tubing from the plumbing and i'm gonna have to test it and see what i can do to remedy the situation.

uggggg this whole build has had issues from the start. the filter i purchased and its fittings were a bit to high for the stand. my stand had a shelf above where the filter will resides. i had to tear out the shelf and also the doors as they were being held by the shelf. now i have to find a black cloth to drape the front and hide the filters and such.

all this meant that i had to alter how i wanted the plumbing to go. so some of the plumbings were needed which i had to order and wait for them to arrive and some i had to go back and forth to home depot and ace hardware stores.

sorry......i just had to get this off my chest.......i'm gonna take a long break maybe continue testing the overflow later today to better understand what went wrong. once i get this part figured out my tank will have a sweet filter and my corals and fish will be very happy.

It's kind of a mess right now. But when I get home I'll upload some photosof where I'm at.

I just looked at some of my live rock I put in my sump, they are not looking all that great. Need to put in some water flow. I added a pump to it, hopefully that will take care of things tomorrow..... it's my day off so I should have everything up and running tomorrow.
 
ok here is an update. i finally have the filtration finally plumbed and up and running. here are some pics of my setup:

now the only things to do is fine tune it, clean things up a bit, and aquascape the tank. i have my live rock right now in a large trashcan in saltwater with a pump to keep it aerated for when i'm ready to aquascape it with them.

my current problem now is noise. from what i read this dyi design was supposed to make it silent. Inside the weir the water drops down a few inches or so which creates the gurgling noise. i have to figure out how to make the water level in the tank and weir the same or some way to muffle the sound.

yeah that one is a champ. it needs low light. it is super slow growing however. i call it my alien blob. it spreads around (or encrusts) around itself and spreads that way. it does not grow outwards. the old growth kind of lost its color initially. but damn that new growth is super cool looking. i can wait for it to encrust the entire rock. i might try and pry the old growth out and see if i can frag it and have it grow out on some other object. i was thinking of trying a glass skull.....that would be awesome!!!!

i have always wanted to do the plant and betta nano tank. there so many cool youtube videos of these low maintenance nano tanks that have live plants and a betta.
