maybe there is a hack for Chrome?

By custom do you mean "other than Google?". If so the answer is "most of them do".

Since Chrome is made by Google it may be the exception. As I don't have it installed I can't test.

I can say for a fact that boat browser allows you to set a default search engine (that's the only browser i use)

chrome will allow other search engines.....on my note 3 it asks if you want to use google, yahoo or bing for your searches.

Atlas browser allows more search engine choices as well. I have mine set to duckduckgo

Boat allows Bing, Yahoo and Duck. I have links to Startpage and Ixquick as well on the speed dial.
