Any converts from the iPhone?

had the iphone 3g..what i realised was that without apps the iphone isnt really anything special.... but i will say it does look great.

the desire is soo much better even compared to the iphone 4 IMO... you can personalise it soo much, i love this. however like all phones there will be a day when i get bored, but i feel now ill be staying with android devices for a while to come. to be honest i love nokias..will be interesting to see what they bring out in the next few years to compete with android and iphone os, because right now their symbian devices are utter s***. they need to step up their game

I had

I had the I phone for over 12 mths. I was due an upgrade and spent weeks on the net, researching which phone was the best one for me.
I was bored with the i phone to be honest and I knew it would take apple pulling something spectacular out of the bag for me to go with the i phone 4. They didn't, and after much studying I fell in love with the Desire and even though I still have no idea of just how powerful this phone can be, I love it and I don't plan on ever going back to the i phone.
For me I think I will always stick with the android.

Two things:

1) Comparing the Desire to the iPhone 3/3GS is pointless. We all know that the Desire wins that battle hands-down.

2) I finally put my Desire on charge (it was at 20%) after a record breaking (for me anyway) 1 Day and 18 hours on one charge. Admittedly that included no 3G, no widgets, about 5 mins of calls and a quick look at the Marketplace (5 mins) and about 300 texts (!)

If I can maintain this kind of battery life I may well change my plan to jump ship to the iPhone4 (but oh man, that screen..... that video capture.....)

I can definitely say that the Desire's battery isn't that big a deal. All these posts got me worried at first but when you can get two days out of your phone with normal use (and I fiddle with it a lot) then it's obvious people are either exaggerating, or they got some vampire app, or they expect too much of it and use it more than it's intended to be used.

Some are so ignorant to compare the Nintendo DS, which will last 15+ hours on a single charge, with a smart phone and complain when a smart phone only lasts a 4-5 hours while playing games.

Widehead, glad the battery seems to be lasting a little better...

Out of interest, what do you think is so good about the iphone 4's display, when I look at it it just looks like ours but not as colourful and with the brightness turned right up. But heh, all in the eye of the beholder.

Best of luck with whatever you do :)

I had a 1gen iphone until just recently. There were several factors for me never getting another iphone.

When i see Jobs face I feel a sudden urge to vomit.
I hate how they rape customers with stupid prices.
I don't want a phone that needs bloated software, that annoys me, to sync it.
I realised iOS was just the same shit, in different casing and hardware. It still completely lacks customization, widgets, social media networking integration, and overall has horrible application communication exchange.
I was tired of having 1000 app icons with no way of short cutting anything. Folders didn't fix anything.
I wanted a phone, that I could hold in my hand when I was making calls and not having to worry about dropped calls.
I didn't want a phone that was made out of some treated glass, that supposedly does not make it stronger, and makes it break after 1-2 drops from a very low altitude.
I tried Android, and I was sold after about 2 minutes of using the device. I think I can honestly say, I will never own another iphone. The one I had served me fairly well, but not without agony. I freaking dig my android phone, it feels 2010, not 2007.

Battery life sucks on any phone with all the bells and whistles turned on, that's just a fact. I use my phone moderately, and i charge it once every other day. On my iphone I could not have ANY push notifications on, as a) the device would almost burn up when i charged it b) drain battery faster then you can say cat-in-hat. Then again, it was an old device.

The battery life is far below what I would expect. My N86 8MP used to last 3 days without charging with 3G and wifi and plenty of multimedia capture. I realize that the AMOLED screen is tiny compared to the Desire but it is still gorgeous to look at (indoors). I guess that I was used to a whole different level of performance. The idea of Android is very seductive but in reality I do less with the Desire than I did with the N86 simply due to concerns with the battery conking out when I need it. Ah well.

As for the iPhone4 screen I guess that it is, to some extent, subjective but it just looks amazing to me. The video playback in particular actually made my mouth drop open.

Oh man. I don't know what to do now. I love Google and Apple and gadgets. Maybe I should just have both and stop whining about it.

The N86 also has a slow-ass processor, a lot less RAM, a smaller screen, a shitty display resolution, and on and on. Of course it consumes power more slowly. Would you use a Pentium 4 laptop today just because its battery lasts longer than a quad-core one?

No I wouldn't. That's why I use a Desire. But hey, thanks for the sarcastic input. Much appreciated.

I just got the Samsung Galaxy and after 3 days of knocking around with it and reading forums i have got it to work and sync with my computer and everything is fine.

My views: The android technology and the interface of the galaxy are quite good a little bit different from the iphone but still i like it...the iphone was good for the time that i had it but i had to replace mine 3 times once due to a screen crack and twice because the mobile internet was ****ing around.

I had an htc touch and got rid of that one quite quickly due to small screen and windows mobile (yuk!)

HYows that desire going?

Peace out

Okay, to all the naysayers who questioned my usage stas......Read it and weep. Cannot get nearly 4 days out of the phone eh??? This for me is a regular occurance hence why I dont understand why peeps complain about the battery.

Riki... bit late to this whole discussion but just looking at your attachment... so what did you do to your battery to condition it to get that sort of life out of it? can you detail step by step?

I'm like the majority of desire users... have to charge once a day, if I could get 3 days out of one charge I'd be ecstatic!

Nice Photoshop!! :D

Meh, some folks are just never satisfied  LOL

I usually never bother with the whole providing proof tbh, in fact the only reason I posted a pic is because I dont like getting called a liar and a bullsh*ter......

This is done on a stock Froyo with latest update.

The first thign to do is to make sure you are getting 100% out of the battery! To do that, charge it to 100% (green light) then take it off charge and check to see (without using the phone) if it drops as soon as the charger is unplugged! IF it does it is not conditioned to take 100% charge. To get round this plug it back in till it gets to 100% again. Remove from charge and check that it doesnt drop off. IF it does re-charge to 100% again. The battery should NOT drop by any amount for at least an hour or two IF the phone is NOT used. I can charge to 100% and it can be still at 100% a few hours later. In fact yesterday evening I charged it at about 11pm and by 9am this morning it was at 96%!

Okay, I have seven homescreens, I do NOT have a live wallpaper.

On screen 1 I have the news app. Screen 2 I have HTC mail. Screen 3 I have the messages. Main screen has the power widget the clock widget and the calendar with appointments widget. Screen 5 is my favorites page. Screen 6 I have set up with all my t'internet/mail/etc apps. Screen 7 is my most used apps/games page.

First place to start would be 'Accounts and sync' found in the menu>settings tab. I have Background data ticked and the rest are unchecked!

Display is set to auto.

Location I have Use wireless networks ticked GPS unticked!

I have the following set to manual connection. Bluetooth, Data, GPS and Wifi.

Not sure what stuff I uninstalled as I dont have it anymore ;) But I dont think I took off that much as I still have the main apps installed. I went through all the apps that were switched on or set to update frequently as default, like Facebook, Friendstream, Weather etc and made sure they only went on/updated when I wanted them to!

It's hard to actually say what I do differently tbh! With my mates normally I just get hold of the phones and set them up as I would use it and then give them it back and let them set about personalizing it to their tastes. After a few days I get the usual "bloody hell Rik, dunno what you did but my phone is on its 3rd day and I still have 20 or 30 % battery left!" where before they were only getting 2 days IF they were lucky

As I keep trying to point out, these phones are badly setup from the start! HTC are trying to do what Apple do and make them dummy proof! Most people wont use half of the crap that is on it. Trouble is, there are some things hidden inside a myriad of settings that just munch away at the battery. Finding them and switching them off is NOT made easy. Especially when peeps like me cannot remember what ones they are :o

But once you switch off all the things and then set them up the way YOU want most of the time the battery life increases by a massive amount.

Doesn't match your claimed usage though. That is a screenshot of a phone that has basically been on standby for pretty much the entire time.

Not really, Even when I use my phone very heavily I get similar % use on mine... It seems it doesnt matter what you do you always get a very similar read out. Still, not sure how that can happen, crazy nearly 4 days!

On a slight side note, I have noticed that with the newest 2.2 that my battery seems to be lasting a bit better. I have now had mine on for around 36 hours. Id take a photo but I used USB to computer to transfer pictures and that means that the charge timer was reset to then even though it was only on for like 3 mins...

I dunno, some folks are just never satisfied

Dude. You can't claim hours of usage and then show us the stat screen from a phone that clearly hasn't had hours of actual application usage.

Next time, press the android system bar and show us the minutes of application usage.

Some people are not satisfied because the picture, as it is, tells us your battery lasts 3 days because you barely use it.

Remember:
I had to plug in yesterday and after using the phone for over 2 hours of calls (most with BT on), a fair number of texts, around 5 hours surfing (both wifi and data), and a few hours gaming (sudoku and chess mostly) the usage stats showed 3 days 17 hours since last charge.

Hmmmm.

Widehead, seriously mate you are looking for reasons to have a dig at a phone which obviously does what you and the other naysayers cannot get it to do.....Not my fault mate.....Maybe you should get a dumbass phone and leave the tech stuff to the big boys and girls :p

As for the usage stats you obviously DONT know how to read them correctly as you are claiming the phone wasnt used for nearly half the time......That is incorrect!

The stats (in the pic) show a timeframe of 89 hours since last charge (never mind the fact there was just under 30% left). The phone was idle for 39% of those 89 hours. You do the maths, but factor in that I was asleep for somewhere between 24 and 30 hours during this period it kind of makes your statement null and void!

I went out of my way to provide people with PROOF that this phone CAN actually do what I (and many others) have said it is capable of! Ah well, I stand by my initial response, SOME PEOPLE ARE NEVER SATISFIED!

Another thing I would like to point out is the phone stats that come from HTC are based on a Desire running 2.1 (Eclair) and NOT on 2.2 (Froyo) which everyone knows is more efficient. Try doing some real world tests on an "official" Froyo based Desire and NOT on old and out of date stats! So quote like for like and NOT old hat!

Adieu :D

I am about to jump ship to an iPhone4. My Desire is great (with one major flaw outlined below) but but but I wish I had read more about the camera and battery life before I bought it.

Frankly, the battery life of the Desire ruins the device. I know that there are workarounds but come on - why am I having to work around something so fundamental as battery life?

There are people here who write things like "I watched 2 hours of HD video, played games all afternoon, listened to 6 hours of music, surfed the web for 2 hours, weather and gmail synching every 10 mins, wifi on the whole time and I still have 60% charge on my battery". No. No, you didn't. And no matter what ridiculous tech-rain-dances people perform (charge it, unplug it, recharge, unplug and repeat as often as unnecessary) the fact of the matter is this: no smartphone should be released with a battery that does not enable the user to use all the features without having to charge it every 12 hours (or so).

This reason alone is enough for me to move to the iPhone4. Add in the beautiful display image/video capture, the fact that it's slimmer and with 64GB of memory.... No contest.

Edit: I currently have 60% charge after 16 hours. 8 hours of this was taken up with me asleep (and the phone on stand by). Sync is on manual, wifi off the entire time, 3G disabled, screen brightness is at minimum, no web, no games, no music, no widgets, no calls. I have sent about 15 text messages and checked my calendar. Battery life is good. If you don't use your Desire as a smartphone.

This sums up the Desire, really; WONDER why HTC have put a lower grade voltage battery in the HD ????? - anyone know ?

Your original claims were totally false, otherwise you wouldn't have backtracked and changed your entire post. Notwithstanding the fact that your original claims were physically impossible.

I actually do know how to read that screenshot of yours, and the key stat is: "Display 2%" Which means that in this 89 hour period you were barely actually using the phone. If this is meant to be 'proof' of previous claims then where are these 'hours of surfing and games' that you had cited?

Like others have said, you've pretty much had the phone virtually on standby for three days. Your original claims were for three days with hours and hours of use, so don't come here making up a straw man argument to knock down and try to claim you've redeemed yourself.

Your posts are extremely disingenuous because you are leading people to believe that they should be able to get impossible usage figures out of their phones, which will obviously leave people frustrated. It's a pity because much of your other advice is good, but it was spoiled by wildly exaggerated claims.
