Sure the name fashion geek is far off, but anyone into it?
I wear the same "uniform" of sorts to work everyday (chef pants, dishwasher shirt, Crocs) and like to wear something more fun on my days off. Generally shop at H&M for both price and I like their style.
Anyone have a particular style, brand? How do you dress on a typical day?
I have a strange, oddly curious and hard to fit body, so I am going with a qualified bespoke tailor. Price is high, but that is unavoidable. Off the rack sucks. To get a great suit and shirt, I have decided to go with qualified people making the proper decisions in the hopes of getting some new threads that will make me stand out.
I want to be a dandy. I am amazed at what it costs to look like you actually have the right to own an iPhone.
So to educate myself on what is hot and what is not, I started reading GQ Magazine. About all I can figure out is it is easy to drop five grand on a suit. I can drop 8 grand for that matter or $1200.00 on a shirt. Not including the $130.00 socks and a $299.00 belt. And far more, I've noticed.
I also learned that it is easy to drop $10,000.00 on an overcoat and I also learned that some people spend astonishing amounts of money on clothes JUST because of the name. Like some movie star knows jack squat about clothes.
And in the Nordstroms catalog, there is a $300.00 or so pair of distressed jeans. Holes, rips and tears and this is suppose to be style? No, it is what I see when I drive past the homeless shelter.
I also learned that once next year arrives and the fall leaves begin to fall, what was in style this year is out so I need to start over. Or so I have been told. But I also know classic tailoring is always welcome.
I also learned that Pay Less shoes last and last and Florsheim are well made shoes, too. Excluding the plane ticket to London, bespoke shoes can set you back thousands of dollars, but they are made to last for a very long time.
At least they keep the lasts (Google it) for eons in case you want another pair of multi-grand clodhoppers.
But what do I know . . . I wear jeans and sweats, so I must be a bum.
Here in Utah, we have a shop called Utah Woolen Mills. This is a truly great store; family owned and run for several generations. I have bought Pendelton shirts there for a long time. I once bought London Fog overcoats there, but they seem to be gone. I need a new coat, so I'll likely go there because they sell quality at reasonable prices.
Some suits are so bad, even I know they are crap and I am amazed at what even crap can cost if it comes from some dandy shop or Norstroms. But like I said, I am going with a great tailor armed with a ton of questions in the hopes I finally end up with a well made, proper suit.
I am going all black except for the shirt which I can only describe as DuPont Chrome Oxide Yellow. A second shirt in red. Perhaps a new pair of shoes if there is money left over from selling my kidney. Perhaps a bright blue I call "UV Curing Lamp Blue."
So that's about all I know. I am a a black tux in brown shoes.
