edit: I think the free versions just let you surf on http:// sites...you've got to pony-up some cash to get to the whole web (i.e., https:// sites too). I tried EasyTether Lite back when I was not rooted, worked fine. Note: these are NOT wireless tether options (you need root to do that).

If you want truely free options, your going to need root.
