Any other ways to turn screen on?

I come from the Samsung family and its handy hardware button at the bottom (I like it, seems others don't) to turn the screen on/off

Moving to the new Nexus 7 with no such button, are there any other ways to turn the screen on/off besides the power button?

(I did find an app called "Shake screen-on" but I find it too finicky).

I'm a big fan of the poetic slimline case. One you flip the cover the screen comes on... Plus it protects your nexus.

I'll also echo the use of a case. I use the MoKo variety and am pleased with it.

Simply open the case and the tablet automatically comes to life. I feel this is the 1st accessory one should purchase.

The 2nd accessory in my opinion one should purchase is the wireless charger for the tablet. This makes it so easy to charge -- Simply lay the tablet on the charging pad and it confirms with beeps that is on the pad and is charging. Works perfectly with the tablet in the case.

I've also other accessories for the 7.2 that work beautifully -- But to answer your initial question -- Go with a case of your choice and you'll never look back .. .. :)

I just received the poetic case for my Nexus 7 2013 as I had it for the first Nexus 7. For some reason the screen turns off when I close the case but doesn't come on when I open the case. Is there some setting that needs adjusted? I didn't remember having to do anything with my first Nexus and this case.

Widget Locker has an option to turn the screen on via the volume buttons.

There's also this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=grandmaster.awesomeonoff

Although I've seen others say that Battery Life takes a very slight hit with it installed.

Also, if you get a magnetic flip case (like one of the poetics), the screen will turn on automatically when the case is opened.

Thanks! I just got the app. It's working as advertised so far. Will pay attention to see how much battery it uses.

Also picked up a magnetic case (rooCase) for $5. =)

Since the all things root section for this device on androidforums.com is currently lacking in substance I will point you over to XDA.

First you need to gain root access. I used these instructions

Once you have root you can install a kernel that supports double tap to wake and/or sweep to wake (DT2W/S2W). This makes it so much easier to use the N7 then always having to find the power button. I have been using the kernel Bulletproof 1.2 for a few weeks now without issue. It is basically the stock kernel with the wake features added.

This is a known issue. If your wifi is turned off (or unavailable to connect) and your bluetooth is also off, the magnet in the case will not power on the Nexus 7. Actually it will after 15+seconds which makes it seem like it is not working.....
