Any quick way to mute ENTIRE phone?

I have yet to find a way to mute the phone, that mutes everything, including "notifications". For some reason, the ONLY way I can silence the "notifications" sound is to go into the settings, sound, volume and slide it to zero. Is there another option? Volume rocker on side of phone has no effect on notifications, neither does mute button.

Just press down on the volume control, press the gear next to the slider on the screen, and make sure that all four sliders are all the way to the left.

Yeah but a one-tap solution would be nice.
As for airplane mode.. then you wont recieve any notifications... your phone will be virtually dead. Might as well be powered off

Been that long since i used samsung lol. Think ^ dudes right though, it has three states?
I think on custom roms its the same but im too lazy to set up the conditions lol.

Tbh i was at a funeral 2month ago, i just turned my volume right down to zero... what happened...? My alarm went off at full volume lol.... d'oh stupid funerals!

On my Sprint GS3, when I press and hold the volume control down, it lowers the volume to zero on three of the four sliders I mentioned and puts the phone on vibrate. It lowers the volume for system, ringtones, and notifications. That is basically everything except for media. So for me, this is a one button solution to silence everything.

And if I press volume down again, it even turns off the vibrate and puts the phone on "mute". Now it is absolutely silent.

update: Nevermind...I just found out that this doesn't affect the alarm. It still sounds off....hmmm

I had to turn my S3 off yesterday, also at a funeral. I've had several interruptions lately, when I have the phone on "mute". Notifications is unaffected by the mute button, or the volume rocker. The ONLY way to silence it is to open settings, sounds, volume, and slider down, which is a royal pain in the ass. I guess my phone is defective? But when I search the web, I see a lot of people have had volume issues or mute issues with this phone.

You should be able to set to silent mode on the top bar.

If you are referring to the "sound/vibrate/mute" button on the quick options pull down, I've already stated that it has zero effect on the "notifications" volume.

The ONLY way I can silence "notifications" is in the settings menu.

My Sprint S3 was the same. I have a little volume profile widget and it would mute everything but notifications, had to do that separately. Pain the butt. I have a new S4 and it mutes everything including notifications...

I don't understand this because on my stock Sprint GS3, SPH-L710, ver. 4.1.2, when I press and hold the volume down button until it reaches vibrate, OR if I use the mute/sound/vibrate toggle in the notification bar, both of these methods absolutely turn off the email and text message notification sounds. If I select vibrate, then it only vibrates when I get a text message or email, and no sound. If I select mute, then there is no vibration and no sound at all when a text message or email comes in.

The only sound that this doesn't mute is the alarm sound.

As I mentioned, I am using a stock GS3 with the stock messaging and gmail programs that came with the phone.

Is your phone and the messaging applications stock?

Completely stock Verizon S3. If I hold down the volume rocker until it vibrates, then go to the settings and look at the volume sliders, all are at "0" except "Notifications" which doesn't move at all. Same thing happens with the "mute" button on the pull down menu. "Notifications" isn't affected. The ONLY way I can change the volume or mute "notifications" is manually in the settings.

It's annoying to set phone to mute or to drop volume via the rocker, an still be awakened during the night by email notifications.

Use the app I suggested. I use it to turn off my notification sounds at night when I'm sleeping and turn it back on in the morning. I can do this with a single tap on the widget.

For some reason, on about the 20th try, it works now....?

I say it works....it's showing the slider all the way to the left in the setting sound menu. I'll assume it won't alert if I get an email!

*Nevermind, still not working.

It shouldn't make any sound when you get an email if the "notification" slider is all the way to the left.

Test it like this...press up on the volume button at least two times, then press the gear symbol that appears to see the four volume sliders. On my phone, starting from the top down, these sliders are ringtone, media, notifications, and system. With your finger, move all of the sliders to the right, then wait a few seconds for the menu to disappear. Then press and hold down the volume button until the phone vibrates. Again, press the gear symbol to see the volume sliders, and you should see all of the sliders have move to the left except the "media" slider.

On my phone, this turns off the notification sound for almost everything including the stock G-Mail, Email, calendar, and text messaging apps. It does not turn off the sound for any alarms that I have set in the stock clock application.

Try Volume Widget: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.leepstudios.VolumeWidget

Create one profile that has 0 volume on everything, notifications and all. Then you can just tap on the widget to activate that profile. You can create 3 profiles in all and switch to any of them by tapping the widget once.

+1 to this. I have mine set up with a profile called "Library" that sets everything to zero volume with one press, and another that returns everything to full volume.

I find that using the mute/vibrator option shortcut keeps my Samsung absolutely silent. That's what I use during classes and meetings.

I use a program called "shush". It not only silences everything, when you use it, it will ask for how long you should have no notifications. After that time (you choose, each time) it turns back on, so after that business meeting / funeral / class / movie you don't miss calls because you forgot your phone was silenced.

Well, I thought the volume rocker was suddenly working, but it's not. The ONLY way to silence the notifications, in in the menu under sound. Very disappointed by such a stupid oversight.
