Help any video chat app that WORKS?

InGearX

Android Enthusiast
I have droid 3 from Verizon...

and I want to chat via video with friends Wifi or 3G...

is there any app that would work with the front camera?

the preinstalled Skype fails to work with the front camera :(

am I missing something with Skype? hack?
is there any other release?

is there any other service / software out there?

Please help...

Please advise... thank you...

Skype is now working on D3 but only in landscape mode. Google Chat video seems to work great either way, portrait or landscape.

Is Google Chat compatible with other apps on other phones? (Like can I video chat with an iPhone user?)

Actually, I can't even find Google Talk in the marketplace... is it part of something else? Is it already on my phone and I don't know it?

You can chat with anyone else using Google Talk, but they can be using Google Talk or GMail on the computer, not necessarily on another smartphone with Google Talk.

Actually you need to pick which ever one everyone you want to video chat with has or can access. I still don't understand why there isn't a standard protocol for this that everyone can use and then just use the app of your choice. For me, I had influence over everyone I chat with and picked Tango as the cross platform choice. Skype might be there now but I haven't tested it yet as Tango was working fine.

I just Skyped last night D3 -> iPhone for the first time, I had heard it worked, and I knew it worked D3 -> Computer, but all I did was use the Skype from the market, sign in, and make the call. I was on WiFi the entire time, the other end was on both ATT 3G and WiFi.

This may sound stupid, but do you have Video Chat enabled in the settings menu? It's possible to untick it.

I can check the settings--just to be sure I'm doing it right, can you tell me the > > > path to the right setting?

Here's everything I do to get there...

  1. Sign in
  2. Menu key
  3. Settings
  4. Scroll down to bottom of list
  5. Tick "Enable video calling"

Is that in the general phone settings? Because "Enable video calling" isn't there. Nor is it there in the Google Talk settings. I'm confused!

The Droid3 ships with a Verizon-specific version of Skype called Skype mobile that does *NOT* support video calls on the D3, nor does it support calling on WiFi

However, there is another Skype app on the Android market that *DOES* support the front-facing camera on the D3 and supports video calling with Skype users on the iPhone, as I just tried doing so, successfully, with my sister on an iPhone 4.

Here is the app: https://market.android.com/details?...?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5za3lwZS5yYWlkZXIiXQ..

It will leave you with two Skype apps on the phone, but this one will work.

I don't think there is any setting you need to enable. Make sure your D3 has the latest updates from Verizon; when I first got my phone Google Talk Video Chatting was not supported, but they added it in an update.

As stated before, the person you are going to chat with must also be using Google Talk, on whatever their platform of choice is (except iPad or iPhone I think, Apple wants them to FaceTime. I think there is no Google Talk app for iOS. If want to chat with someone on an i-Something I'd suggest Skype or Tango).

Once you are in the Talk app you can see your contacts list. If you don't regularly use your GMail account or Google Talk you may need to add the contact (Menu -> Add friend -> whoever@gmail.com -> Send Invitation). Your online contacts should be at the top of the list, and they'll have a green, orange, or red icon to their right. Those who are on a video chat enabled device will have a little video camera for that icon. Just tap on the icon and it'll start the call.
