ROM Manager is pretty easy and takes the hassle out of it. If you follow the method detailed in the above post, you get the new radio, EXT4 partitions etc and it will run as it's supposed too.

There are a themes to try here: Desire HD Themes and Apps - xda-developers
Just make sure you flash Sense themes (it should say in the name or the thread title), not AOSP ones.
