Help Anyone Else Have Odd Touchscreen Movement Tracking Behavior?

Greetings, fellow Turbo 2 users.

I've noticed something odd about the touchscreen on this phone. When I first place my finger (or touch pen) on the screen, the touchscreen does not track any movement of the touch at all until it has moved about 70 pixels in any direction. Only after that does it properly track every small motion. This is problematic when manipulating anything having to do with a dragging gesture, such as the seeker on media or brightness slider, for example, because you end up having to drag far beyond where you wanted to in order for the screen to start tracking a dragging movement. Then you have to drag back to where you wanted. Basically, the screen doesn't track dragging until after that initial touch has moved a pretty significant amount. After the first recognition of the touch moving, it tracks perfectly as long as you keep your finger on the screen.

My only guess right now besides a defect is that it is either intentionally designed that way or caused by the Verizon brand flexible glass screen protector that I had placed on it (amid reports that the exterior lens is not very scratch resistant). I don't believe I've ever run into a touchscreen that has this substantial "dead zone," and I'm hesitant to try taking off the screen protector.

The easiest way to see it is with the "Yet Another Multitouch Test" app from the play store or enabling the "Pointer Location" overlay from developer options. When I test it, slight movement in any direction or even moving my finger in a circular motion doesn't move the pointer overlay (and the x and y positions stay unchanged). Even if I have multiple touches on the screen at a time, it won't track the movement of any particular pointer until I move it a good 60-70 pixels away from the initial point of detection.

So I just want to know if anyone else has observed this problem before I do anything.

I appreciate any reply.

The exterior lens is user replaceable and Motorola is selling replacements (for a kind of outrageous $30, fwiw.)

I can't say for sure, but I would surely suspect that the extra screen protector is your issue. The display was designed for factory condition, is air gapped (meaning that there is space between the part you touch and the touchscreen sensors, while almost all other phones these days have no such gap.) I'd also guess that a glass protector would be worse than a scratch proof plastic one, such as made by Zagg or Skinomi.

So, if I were you, I'd be taking that extra protector off to see if it is causing the touchscreen detection issues you report, or if it is a defect in the phone, and then I'd be back at Verizon looking for a warranty replacement if it is the phone in stock condition behaving this way.

But, you are not me.

My guess - very few people have placed protectors over this display, since it is shatterproof and user replaceable, so you may not find many people who have their Turbo 2 set up as you have. Hopefully, though, somebody who has the same setup can report back.

Thanks for the information and advice guys. I went ahead and peeled off the screen protector, but the touchscreen still exhibits the same behavior. I'm wondering what a factory reset would do, but I'm thinking this is wholy hardware related.

I guess I'll wait for someone to report here if they have the same issue, and if not go say hello to Big Red. At least I managed to keep the protector on with only a small bubble in the corner, for what that's worth.

EDIT - Thom, I bad been wondering the same thing about the replacement screen because I hadn't seen anywhere to buy it, but it looks like Motorola recently put up a page for it now that I just googled it: http://www.motorola.com/us/protection/droid-turbo-2/moto-shattershield-lens-replacement.html

That would be my guess as well. If you do get a replacement device, it's possible that Verizon or Motorola will suggest a factory data reset anyway before they process a warranty exchange. And a replacement will require a set up from scratch.

So, I'd do it anyway, just to rule out a software issue, and then you'll *know* and can tell them that you've already tried a fdr.

While playing games, the screen is very slow to respond. Makes it pretty difficult to play any fast paced games.
