Help Anyone else having trouble setting up e-mail with the stock e-mail app?

I've been trying to set-up my e-mail accounts on the thunderbolt with the stock app like all afternoon without success.

I am trying to use Exchange ActiveSync with my work but whenever tried logging in. It would say something along the lines of Authentication Failed. I kept trying to change different settings but it never worked.

So I tried to set up different e-mail accounts like Gmail and yahoo. Neither of those require me to manually set up domain/server settings. Both Gmail and Yahoo said "Authentication failed. Please verify your username/password." I know the passwords I was typing are indeed correct because I logged on through a web browser on the phone with those same passwords and it worked.

Also, I have no problem logging in and using the gmail app either.

I did a search prior to creating this thread but didn't find any useful information. There was a video explaining how to create a yahoo e-mail by manually setting up and changing the port to 137 but that did not work either.

Does anyone have a solution to this or is at least experiencing these problems?

All of my pop3 accounts and exchange accounts set up fine. Maybe try a reboot to see if something was screwed up on the Mail app?

I did that. I also performed factory reset last night to see if that would do anything but that didn't work either.

And you said GMail app works fine for you? Is market working fine for you, letting you download stuff?

Yes. The Gmail application is working correctly. Market is also working fine. I've not had any trouble with any other app that asks me to log in.

May be a bit off-topic but still all mail related. Coming from BB Storm - which is sort of an email machine. I realize TB is not push but (1st android device) I am running into a couple things I do not understand. These could be aspects of Android, or the native email app or possibly something else. In addition to the new (required) gmail - which I will likely only use for phone/market - I have yahoo, hotmail and 2 other pop (my own url hosted thru godaddy).

Set for update every 10 minutes.
- sometimes I get a new mail notification while the phone is sitting on the counter (sleep mode? - dark screen but not having hit the power button) and other times no notifications until I wake up the phone and open email. Any ideas why this happens? Is there a setting that will "notify" for new mail received each time it updates/refreshes?

- I may be a bit spoiled from BB in that I had the 4 email boxes on the desktop and just one look at the screen I could see which accounts had new mail and how many. Can I set up short-cuts to accomplish this (individual icons for each email account showing numbers of new emails)? If yes, little help with how?

- On BB I could change ringer profile to "calls only" (as one of several options) that was great for night. This allowed the alarm to function, calls to ring but silenced all incoming emails. Is this possible on TB? If yes, little help with how?

- Lastly, on BB I could set a different notification tone for each email box. This allowed me to know, just from the designated sound, which email inbox received new mail. Obviously, having 4 email addresses, some have differing priorities at times. This was wonderfully convenient. Is there a way to do this on TB?

I realize Android is not BB but I have heard so many wonderful things about how customizable Android is. I am hoping these are all doable. Obviously none are TB deal-breakers but I have quite the adjustment to make here learning Android and getting some of these little wrinkles ironed out early would allow me to spend more time on learning other features and versatility of Android and TB.

Tryngetaclu- Download k-9 mail, it will do most of what you're trying to do. I too came from a bb storm and I'm using k-9. So far so good.

You'll have to re-do the account set-ups.

3 more Q's (Android REALLY is all new to me - sorry):
- Can I leave the Gmail in the stock mail app and run K-9 for my other 4? It looks loke Gmail is its own app; how does this impact?
- Should I delete my email accounts from the stock email app before downloading k-9?
- "permissions" says "keeps phone from sleeping" - does this mean the screen stays on all the time? How much does this impact battery life? I notice that the phone screen darkens and needs the power button to awaken the screen. how is this different from pressing the power button to black out screen - ("quick boot"?)?

Thanks again!!

Any advice about

Thank you for the help. I have figured out how to set up my exchange e-mail.
I'll explain in depth to assist anyone else who may be having this problem.

First, I went to the applications list, picked Mail, and then forced stop and cleared data. This left me with only two options to choose from when trying to set up an e-mail address: Exchange ActiveSync and Other (POP3/IMAP). I tried to play with the settings on my Exchange account during the set up but it didn't work out.

I ended up downloading and successfully setting up my Exchange account on the K-9 application. During the set up of the K-9, it only asked me for the Exchange Server, Security Type, Port, Mailbox Alias, OWA Path, and Authetication Path. The last three in that list were optional.

All I entered was the Exchange server (which for me was just the site address without the http://), Security Type (SSL for me), username, and password. I was able to set this up immediately without any frustrations.

I decided to work with just those fields in the stock e-mail application. I entered my e-mail address, server address, username, password, and checked the box "This server requires an encrypted SSL connection." It asks for a domain name which is what my Exchange e-mail normally has to use. However, in this case, I decided to experiment and left it blank. Success. Just like that I got it to work.

I hope these walls of text help whoever stumbles upon this thread if they're also experiencing the same problems. It irritates me when I search for threads where there is a question posted and then the poster replies to it him/herself saying they figured it out without explaining how.

I'm still having a little trouble setting up my yahoo account on the stock e-mail application but when I get that figured out, I will post a tutorial.

Gmail is its own app and should be kept separate.

K9 is way better than the stock mail app. Once you switch to it, yes, I would delete the account information from the other client. If you dont, you will periodically receive notifications from it. K9 will run in the background, and check for messages at whatever interval you set. I did not notice any drain battery using k9 compared to the HTC app.

The stock HTC client is not good, especially for pop3 accounts unless it got fixed after the froyo updates pushed out last fall.

Thanks. I deleted my accounts, loaded k-9 and setup all the accounts. spent last hour playing around and trying to learn features and settings. "Quiet time" is nice and it also seems to be letting me establish different tones for each account.

Haven't found a way to make icons on desktop for each account (pref w/new-msg counter) or how to change which account opens when the K-9 opens. Is there a way to see the "Accounts" page when K-9 opens as first page? Is there an instructions link for this app anywhere? Haven't seen it so I guess I'll keep searching.

Perhaps there are instructions for all Android apps located somewhere but I am only a day into Android so...

Thanks everyone for this help. I'll get there and veteran's patience with newb questions is greatly appreciated! :)

Try backing out of K9 using the back arrow button, at least to the accounts list before you switch to another program. Next time you open K9, it should open to the accounts page instead of one of the individual accounts pages.

Thanks again to everyone! K9 seems soooo much better. I have set diff tones for each email account and can set each to poll at diff intervals too (most used more frequently (each minute) others at much longer intervals (helps with batt life too).

As for the icons, I am finding it unnecessary as the notifications bar swipe down shows new emails in their individual boxes - only the new msgs :) - and provides direct access too. Very nice. Starting to really like this phone. Still MUCH to learn but I'm catching on much faster thanks to help from everyone!

Hi there is a real issue with stock email app from Android. It seems that most corporations using active sync use feature that is not supported right now by Droid OS. Seems that this is a well know issue and has been asked from developers for over a year now and no solution from Google. I have been testing droids for a while now and everyone of them has same issue with active sync. This is also the case on the new droid Moto pad. The problems show up as no sync in certain things (like no contacts or calendar or even missing events). Also there is no a real way to fix this unless you install some other SW.

here is a link to droid error reports
