Anyone here planning on buying a HTC Magic?

Bingo. I said it before, I'll say it again, HTC had two chances to get it right before someone else came out with something. Right out the gate people were voicing their concerns about a lack of internal memory on the G1, and they blew their nose on it. It's only redeeming value is that the Tmo US version may have UMA.

I'm not saying I will be ruling out an HTC Android phone in the future; but the Magic is out, I7500 is in.

Two of us on the same page !!!

Then don't you think it would be a lot easier to just buy that "oh so perfect for you" phone rather than complain about your current phone's supposed shortcomings?

Show me an android phone with a dpad and a physical 5 row qwerty keyboard, and I'll use it. Until then, I'll advocate that one should exist. I have as much right to advocate that it should exist as you do to whine about me advocating it.

you're no better than I am so don't talk to me like you are...

I didn't say, nor even imply, that I'm a better person than you (insecure there?), I merely pointed out a lapse in your reading comprehension. Which you seem to be validating.

When did I ever whine? O.o
If anything...you're the one whining about how the G1 doesn't meet your "standards"...

You're not advocating anything....you haven't once said anything about wanting the phone you described up there...

All you've done is say..."The G1's trackball sucks" ...

Oh really?

Is English your first langauge? because, clearly, you need to go back to school and learn how to read.
^ Are those not your words?

Are you not trying to belittle my intelligence in that paragraph?

In order to belittle someone...you have to already think that your are better than they are...

Lawl, Rozza, you should just give up.

I noticed you refused to respond to him in the beginning when he attempted to belittle you. I think you should stick to that procedure, as now it seems as if he is just wasting your time.

Anyone can adjust to anything with any amount of time trying. If you fail to try to adjust to it, then of course you will fail and/or dislike what you're attempting to adjust to.

You guys have slowly gotten off the topic of the G1 trackball and are now starting to attack each other, not incredibly harshly, but still, attacking each other.

John, no matter what you think, you are insulting Rozza when they are just sharing their opinion. It might not seem like it to you, but it does to me.

It's just the same as you thinking the trackball is crap as the rest of us think it's the opposite. And this will probably become more and more apparent to you as more and more start to appear on more and more devices. I suppose we'll expect to see more and more threads as well huh?

Lol I was thinking of giving up...but then I decided not to...
It's the competitive side in me...I guess.. :D

Anyway.....back to where we were originally...

Magic or I7500?
Trackball or D-Pad?

I like my G1! Like I said, it's my baby!

I wouldn't be able to decide about either one, the Magic or the I7500. Based on specs, I'd choose the I7500 for sure. But, whether a phone fits comfortably in my hand and take minimal and movement to navigate around the phone.

So, until I hold a phone I can't be too sure which one it is I'd get. I'm also a big fan of the physical keyboard, but as I am using the on screen more and more often I'm, hey, what do you know.. I'm adjusting to it! Oh, the irony.

Anyway, as of now I prefer a physical keyboard, but maybe in the future that will change and I will prefer a thinner, sexier device.

Those are greater than and less than signs, not arrows, lawl.

You saw the third one? =O

I agree. Unless something magical happens and the cupcake update allows apps on the sd card.

It's a shame really- I wonder who determined the internal memory capacity, the hardware in this case is really hurting Android- I'm on the sidelines and I'll admit, I'm fascinated by Android and I want Android to succeed but I'm not going to wait forever to buy my first smartphone- I'm interested other smartphones as well.

If only the Magic had a few GB of memory- really, that's all HTC needed to do to fend off Samsung. And I don't think that's asking for too much.

The Magic really is just a G1 minus a keyboard. They either haven't addressed the internal memory issue of the G1 or they're planning on allowing apps on the SD card, with the former being where I lean to. Honestly, there's nothing special about this phone.

I wasn't aware there were memory problems on the G1. Besides being able to load bigger apps, what does an increase of RAM allow android to do better? I figured 190Megs of RAM wasn't bad for a phone...

Well The G1 has a very small amount of memory Compared to iphone and the On the horizon Samsung i7500 with 8GB plus sdcard ..

Well I can buy a 8GB sd card (Their what, $60, if that), I don't really care how much ROM it has. But I want to know if there is a major improvement with an extra 60megs or so of RAM when comparing the G1 to the Magic.

Will if you dont think it makes a difference ... try running your PC on 256MB
and no HD

Then Come back and tell us it doesnt matter how much memory the OS has to work with ...

Well yea, my computers got 4GB of ram, it would be shit with only 2. But... I'm not gunna run fallout3, photoshop, and firefox with a bunch of addons at the same time... on a cell phone. Well the SD card can act as a harddrive right?

Same principle with the phone If your apps run out of memeory then it has to use HD or flash memory to cache ... so the less memory the worse off you are fro running any system ...

Well ya, but is android a resource hog? I mean, it wasn't made by Microsoft... so I'm sure it leaves plenty of free RAM for aps and the like. Have you had any problems with lack of memory? Or are their apps with "known issues"?

Btw, thanks for covering this with me, I'm still a bit new with Android considering I don't even have an android phone.

Yes It is a very powerful resorce hog ... (a good thing) because you can run so many processes in the background ... but not so good with limited memory ...

Dang. Well the Magic doesn't have that much more memory. It has like 60 more megs of RAM and like 100 more megs of ROM (if i remember corectly). Is that much really a good improvement over the Dream's memory? The samsung has good RAM and ROM but its only coming out in Europe.

Maybe I should just wait till next fall or so when all the phones start coming out. Are their any android ones coming out in fall? I've had my phone for almost 5 years... whats an extra half a year gunna do?

Seriously, you can unlock them? I figured they would only operate on the networks in Europe. I thought that the signals vary from country to country and that phones don't work for all of them unless designed to do so.

Depends on the phone and the Radio freq's It has available ... my previous phone was a SE 990i from the UK Orange ... I am US Phone was Unlocked, Unbranded and I just slipped my sim in and away i went .... I could not do Video phone ... but no one else I know has that even on their phone ...

I could called a TV station maybe and uplow live video on the scene if they cared to see it ... But not all phones are frozen to one Place or One Carrier in most cases... Especailly for GSM ... CDMA is a different Animal ...

Key term. You wont see very many phones now a days, this goes double for smart phones, that aren't world phones or quadband as they are referred to as.
Ah, k. Yea I saw somewhere that he samsung phone was quadband.

If i brought the phone straight to Tmobile could they get me started with it? My current provider, Verizon, doesn't deal with simcards, so it would probably be harder.

Why is CDMA hard/Does the US use it?

1. You are not able to use a GSM phone on the Verizon network.

2. Yes, T-Mobile can set you up, provided you bring them an unlocked phone. They wont unlock a phone that was not purchased, on contract, through them.
Eh, I don't like Verison anyways.

That's cool, I'll have to keep that in mind when I get the phone. It comes out in September right?

I am seriously considering the Magic after running with a TYTN II for the last 12 months. Don't get me wrong the TYTN II has been a cracking phone and has done everything i needed it to do, but because of its bulk and tired Windows OS i want a change.
I had a play with a Magic at my local Vodafone store and can say i am very impressed by it.
Firstly its looks. Nice a sleek, very light, fantastic screen and, for me, easy to slip in your pocket. The Android OS, which i have not seen before, is very user friendly and a hell of a lot quicker than my current windows sloth. I like the way you can customise nearly everything on the screens and make it your own. The 3G internet connection is super fast and google maps works well with this. The only thing i have an issue with at the moment is the fact that even though it has a GPS reciever you have to pay extra to use this functionality. On my TYTN II i have Tom Tom installed and it does not cost me a penny to find out where i am and where i am going. Vodafone also have some great deals out for this handset at the moment, so i will probably end up taking one of these and retiring my existing brick.
Thanks for all the other guys who have posted on this thread, it has helped me make my mind up......nearly!
Cheers

Oh... just one other thing whilst i am ranting. The on screen keyboard is very good and the presence of the accelrometer to turn it into a qwerty one is cool. Very responsive touch and for me, with fat fingers, did not have a problem typing out texts etc.
