Anyone owning or considering a OnePlus One....

The only reason I have factual data regarding Lau, is as a result of my decades long involvement in the tech industry at the level of large scale international operations. Working within a company so vast that I've been exposed to a very robust circle of notable contacts over the years, my colleagues and I know, or have had contact with most of the major industry players over the years, young and old.

That said I have a full appreciation of the challenges OP faces, it's only their approach and current execution or lack thereof that I find rather distasteful.

Personally? It doesn't matter to me.

It's just another company and another product.

If not for my genuine interest in my fellow enthusiast, and the general public's experience, I wouldn't even bother posting my thoughts, knowledge and opinions.

The good part is that you are open and consistent with your thoughts/opinions. Anyone considering this phone will be very informed if they read this forum. It's filled with knowledgeable people with differing views.

Thanks for the kind words... :)

It's a awesome phone. My only complaint with my unit is call volume. I have a hard time hearing my wife on calls but for some calls it sounds great. There's a fix for it but I gotta root

Would you mind giving my rooting guide a whirl and letting me know of anything needs to be clarified our improved? :)
No i wouldn't mind but I am debating root or waiting for the update. I had a OnePlus employee email me yesterday and I emailed back that I heard there was a update pending and wanted her to confirm it. I just need my call volume fixed. That would be the only reason I'd root so soon. I've only had my 1+ since Monday

Did OnePlus confirm with you?

My three emails to them on separate support issues have gone unanswered, it's been twelve days.

i'd strongly suggest staying on 25R until they issue the fix for the fix.

my brief time on 3O0 saw speaker phone volume improve but at the cost of battery life.

I concur, after reading about the update that will be pushed out in the next few days I'm waiting.

I have to say, I love this phone. I'm rooted on stock 30O with TWRP, and have had zero issues (after a little hiccup while rooting).
Speaker volume is great, battery life is fantastic, camera is amazing, and it's the perfect size for my hand.
I hope the issues you're having are fixed with the update, but even if you root you can the update one way another. Might as well start having fun now :D
First thing I did was root. It's a must for how I use phones.

I'm on 30O and battery life is great. Overnight I lost just 3%, and very little of that came from Android OS and none of it from Google Play Services.

It should be noted that I've turned off double-tap to wake and screen gestures since I don't use either.

there in lies the problem. i totally do use those gestures and may never be able to go without double tap wake on a phone.

they're working on it. in the meantime, i'm back on 25R with everything on and awesome battery life restored.

Unfortunately I've grown to despise OnePlus as a company, their unacceptable behavior and almost non existent communications, ignoring certain customers at random. If you get a good OPO, your incredibly lucky, when they operate properly it's a fine phone. Conversely get a defective one and suddenly you've paid a few hundred bucks to have a horrid experience.

I am rather surprised that amidst this good news vs bad news tug of war within the company, they do seem to be performing when it comes to updates. Perhaps along the way they'll hire some adults to teach them about the importance of customer service and a long standing concept called honesty.

Was talking to a couple of techy friends in Shenzhen last night about them, and they lead me to believe it can be rather potluck as to what you might get with a OnePlus, a good one or a lemon. Likely the QA on the production lines is not so good. See here we're only paying 2000 yuan (CNY) for a OnePlus One from oneplus.cn, compared to paying around 5000-6000 yuan for a Samsung S5 or an iPhone 5S. You get what you pay for maybe?

Even here, everything to do with OnePlus is done online, buying and service/repair. They got no local stores or service centres at all. Now Oppo on the other hand, paying more for the Find 7/7a than the OnePlus One, their local service is excellent, it's walk in and while you wait, they either replace or repair there and then.

Yes, and the downside with a larger company: a huge portion of the price goes toward the cost of this:
You don't have to pay for this with a OnePlus, which is one of the main reasons I bought mine. I want my money to go toward a good phone, not Apple's obscene profits (for an inferior device) or Samsung's legal fees and enormous marketing budget.

Yeh, I know Apple can be obscenely expensive, especially here, but part what you're paying for is customer service though, i.e. the Geniuses you find at the Apple Store.

Your iPhone gives trouble, take it to the Genius and he'll often replace it there and then, no argument. Very much the same thing with Oppo in China.

Your OPO gives trouble...to quote @zipred in this thread...
"Failure to have the courtesy to even return correspondence. Ignored emails are commonplace, even when the customers device is inoperable. Obscenely high prices are being charged (additional markup above the shippers fee) to return devices for warranty work in the rare instance when OPO does decide to honor their warranty."

...and apparently it's not much better here in China either, OnePlus's home country.

Even four months after launch, OPO seem to be having serious problems with consistent product quality AFAICT.

oneplus is struggling with customer service because they simply don't have the staff to handle it at this time and this wouldn't change if they charged $600 for the phone.

the company isn't even a year old and we're comparing them to companies that have been around for decades. i ask again, was there poor customer service with the nexus line? oppo is not helping them at all with CS and logistics. they're on their own.

i really don't see this as a "you get what you pay for" situation but rather you get what you get from a company that started not even a year ago from scratch.

the majority of people who have gotten their phones have been satisfied but there is a lot of frustration and doomsday chatter from those who have gotten defective units. those people have every right to be frustrated and oneplus has to take care of those customers but they aren't gonna do it as fast as the big companies because they simply don't have the resources for that.

they're not ignoring anyone, its just gonna take longer.

And I have to say what do you really need customer service for anyway. Anyone who bought this phone knows android, knows cyanogenmod, knows what they're getting. I myself had sent 3 emails to OnePlus and all 3 have been answered. I know someone who returned theirs for a refund, the only wait was waiting for them to say "send it back" which took 4 days versus calling Samsung, or whoever. That was 2 weeks ago but as I type this that person has their $ back. I'm not gonna go by some third party experience from a person I don't know. My customer service experience with them has been what I expected from a startup.

Watch a show called "silicon valley" on HBO, those guys have a tech startup and it kind of gives you an idea of the complications you face and this guys are geniuses with competition nowhere near the size of Samsung, LG etc. OnePlus is not perfect, but they are growing and learning along the way which last I checked was the human way of doing ANYTHING

Rather than listen to a 3rd party report, get some info from the Director of OnePlus Global.

Also notice the date of the interview. It's only 2 weeks ago

I bought the 1+1 (64gb) off the shelves in a local hand phone store. It also comes with 2 years store warranty so I don't have to deal with any support on OnePlus' end. Here, in South Pacific the mobile market is crazy, which is good for us, lots of choices and really good price, which devices available the next day of a launch (We even have MotoX here, days before it reached the customers in USA).

Other than that, I'm very happy with the phone. The battery life is crazy. I get to use it a lot (email, whatsapp, camera, Spotify pretty much few hours a day, instagram etc..), and 12 hours later I'm just down to 55% or 60% (the lowest I managed to reach). While I do miss some of the little things I had on my previous Samsung devices, I'm totally in love with the CM 11.

No issues of any kind, no battery problems after the latest firmware update, all seem fine.

cheers

Seba

I have no problem being patient and waiting. My OPO is just one of four currently active smartphones I have, an advantage most people don't have.

I've always maintained the position of giving people / companies the benefit of the doubt when it comes to my first contact with them. After all as someone who works in a huge multinational company I understand labor and parts delays.

The reason I'm speaking out about this company is because they seem to say one thing and do another. One example of a few I could cite is as follows. We have a large continent of OnePlus owners at work. Three of us have significant hardware issues and sent emails to OnePlus. One owner received a response within three days. The remaining two of us, weeks later still haven't received a response and we've sent follow up emails.

That's what I'm experiencing. Even a brief email from them explain they're running long and will be getting back to us would be comforting.
