Anyone seen a car dock?

Believe what you want. This:

Interesting Theory: New iPhone 5 Dock Connector Could Be Compatible With Micro-USB

and hundreds of articles showing dozens of leaked iphone 5 photos clearly show they won't have the standard 30 pin connector.

And, yes, I agree that if they did this, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot and I'll instantly short apple when this is confirmed.

It took me 6 years to buy another ipod after they dumped their "standard" firewire connector and replaced it with the new 30 pin connector. I don't like change :)

wait a second...

so your source...is a tech blog that is literally throwing darts blindfolded, and uses the same tech blog as its source lol...come on...

i mentioned in my own post a smaller dock connector...but i do not think they will go micro usb AT ALL...

not to mention the "article" itself continues to call it a "smaller dock connector" and not a "micro usb" port...simply that it would be "COMPATIBLE" with micro usb (you tell me how that is going to work)...

Yes, that and hundreds of others. There's a search site called google. Perhaps you've heard of it :)

...and how it works is that "COMPATIBLE" means that it will be a USB miro connector.

If most articles are saying compatible, then i'd even veture to say that maybe they decided on a mhl port.

When you get it, can you check if the ball-joint is a generic garmin ball joint (where the actual docking portion can be separated from the mount? Thanks in advance.

and who are they using as a "source?" because in these wonderful days of the internet ANYONE can start up a tech blog and write whatever they want...id venture to say that all of these "hundreds" (hyperbole much?) of articles all link back to the exact same "source" who probably has no real inside information...

...and how it works is that "COMPATIBLE" means that it will be a USB miro connector.
then why not just say "it has a micro usb connector" instead of saying "it has a smaller dock connector that is compatible with micro usb"

I got to thinking about the iBOLT car dock and realized there is a tradeoff when designing for a specific device. With my Driod X car dock, I had to make some modifications to get it to fit correctly because I used a case. In the current iBOLT design it can accommodate most cases, or no case at all.

Assuming that

It isn't a generic garmin ball joint. The phone part easily snaps off from the mount part leaving a smooth back. I used double-sided tape to secure a standard ball joint receiving adapter that I used to mount to the ball joint on my proclip mount.

It fits the standard back just fine. But I am running the Verizon Wireless charging back and had the sand the entire mount down to get it to fit correctly. But now it fits great and I am glad I went with the infuse car mount.

I purchased the iBolt but found that two apps I use occasionally will not run correctly with the odd way the phone has to sit in the cradle.

Both 3D compass and iOnRoad either display upside down (with no option to invert) or does not work at all.

It seems that any app that uses the video camera might be suspect. So before buying this mount, start your apps you use in the car, turn you phone as if it were in the cradle (Samsung label to the right - power connector to the left) to make sure your apps work in that position.

For me, I am returning the cradle to Verizon.

because I really like the way my phone fits with is protective case on.

I wanna say ionroad has a option for left side steering (Might be called someting else, but wasn't obvious for flipping the screen), which for me fixed the upside down screen issue.
Then again I might have ionroad confused with another app.

The iOnRoad settings can be changed so the camera is showing correctly and the whole app works properly in the iBOLT dock. Go to "Settings-Display Settings - Opposite display" and mark this green and it works fine. See screen shots from the app. Hope this helps

I wonder what the rationale for designing the Ibolt that way was? I assume anyon right handed holds the phone with the home buttons under their right thumb. A design for a car dock should allow for a user to use their phone in the way that comes to them naturally, and not waste a moment behind the wheel remembering that it is reversed.

Samsung Infuse Charging Dock for Samsung Galaxy S3 from AT&T for $17.99 including shipping.
Like Binky said - does not look anything close to my Garmin's mount.
So far is my second attempt at buying a dock for my S3, first one being absolute crap and went out in garbage.
Infuse cradle does not allow for use of covers so phone is now naked.
Works good but raises phone too high when on dash, using glass mount.
Will use this for a while until someone comes out with a better power/data connection.

I'm starting to get used to the Infuse dock. It's down to just a few seconds to insert it. Still takes two thumbs to remove it, but it's nowhere near as tight as it was so now I'm no longer worried about it wearing the surface. The inside of the dock including the edges are rubberized rather than plastic which I didn't realize at first.

Still not as good as stock DX mount. Motorola really knows industrial engineering for practicality while apple knows it for beauty.

Then you didn't have the OEM motorola mount for the DX. The OEM mount has the micro usb connector integrated with the unit making the entire process of docking or undocking the DX a 2 second one handed operation.

Not having an integrated usb connector that automatically connects is a deal killer for me. The infuse dock works but it's still a two handed operation to get the S3 out although a one handed operation getting it in.

I think I'm also going to try this one:
KiDiGI Car Mount Cradle for Samsung Galaxy S3

I rarely use landscape mode so this one might be the ticket for me.

I can't tell from the picture...does it have a piece that snaps out to accommodate a case?

I noticed in the demo video that the USB connector was unplugged whilst it was recording video.

... In the current iBOLT design it can accommodate most cases, or no case at all.

Assuming that’s the reason they have you manually plug it in, ...
The Samsung desk dock can accommodate cases by having a longer USB jack, so that isn't it. I am surprised the "tray" wasn't put on the short side for that reason and for less bulk. I can only speculate that there isn't a way to make it that way and accommodate cases and hold it firmly.

Without having seen a car dock that will accommodate a case plus be solid plus have one-handed insert/remove, I'll get this one. At least the connector is right there and I don't have to have a cable lying on the floor to fetch and plug in.

Just picked up the iBolt car mount at Verizon this morning. Very nice mount. Had some difficulty inserting my S3 with case into it until I realized you have to pull out the insert. The clip in the back to take up the power cord slack is a little too tight as it doesn't comfortable fit the standard Verizon vehicle charger cord. Over all, an elegant mount that accomplishes its purpose.

was gonna pick up the ibolt until I learned it wont fit the S3 with Defender.
I guess my options right now are the ram or exogear since arkon is indeed having ball joint issues.

hmm...so VZW is carrying the iBolt in stores now??...i know they have it online and have just been dragging my feet on actually ordering it...

Been using an adjustable Arkon Air Vent Mount like the following since my GPS days in conjunction with whatever AC/DC adapter is required :)

The SM429-SBH is available for < $11 via Walmart and other vendors.

Sure beats buying a custom setup.

Can it holds the phone in landscape? I've been looking for a cheap vent mount dock.

I very much prefer a dock with integrated power but until I can get that I'm not putting any real money into it.

Yes, it works in portrait or landscape mode.

There is an in depth video here for the Arkon's SM429-SBH removable air vent mount.

Also some nice screen shots here.

In the end, it is an inexpensive solution that just plain works.

It also avoids the need to mount it to the windshield or dash, which I have often found problematic (although I have used bean bag bases in the past).

Hi, I have a unique issue connecting my phone directly to my car's (2009 Saab) Aux input that I described in this thread (http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s3/599051-car-aux-input-issues.html). I found that this is unique to Saab (only one other user reported the same issue. They also have a recent model-year Saab. Unlikely coincidence). I know my car's aux will work with other devices(have used ipods, an HTC Evo 4g and a laptop to name a few) and my phone will work with other cars and devices such as home speakers. For whatever reason the two just don't play nicely with each other.

So anyways, my idea to address this is to get a car dock with an integrated charging station with audio out so that the S3 isn't directly connecting to my car's AUX in and my car isn't directly talking with the S3. I'm thinking the odds are good that an intermediary device like a dock will work with my car's AUX. I've also looked at the belkin Aircast as I do have a universal dock already and this should definitely circumvent the headphone connection issue. However, I've read mixed reviews on the aircast and many have said that the audio quality is hit or miss. I know a direct audio-out connection will be the highest quality solution. What I'm wondering is what options do we know of so far that will mount the phone in a car and put it into dock mode. It is crucial that it utilizes it's own line out and is not simply working as an extension of the phone itself, as I will likely face the same problems. I like the look of the iBolt(because I can keep my case on), but I'm concerned that it will end up working like an extension cord and will be unsuccessful at tricking my car and phone into working together. Thanks, and hopefully this isn't too off topic for this thread.
